If you want responses of IQ quality 80 or greater, your post should at least start the ball rolling and show an author with an IQ of 80 or greater.

You are right, I am certainly not counting on audience that can't count to about 90 (tip: count the seconds next to bold wait words) and give each rant appropriate weight. I'll do it for those that can't count to 90 and do division I will summarize my complaint weights:
1/3 for matchamking
1/3 for waiting
1/9 for "nominal" sequence
2/9 for brick on numpad zero

Edit: And since complex math may be involved here, I'll also summarize that the game features a total of 1.5 minutes of inactivity while the battle takes 5 minutes, which means that 23% of the time you are playing MWO, you aren't really doing anything.

I was hoping OP meant an MW2: Mercenaries style Instant Action mode that let you drop into a 3v3 match with bots with random mechs and a random planet. :[

Let me explain my gameplay experience at the moment:

1) I hit play and I wait 30 or so seconds while it is "searching"
2) The game is loaded, and I wait 30 or so seconds for other player's game to load or whatever...
3) I listen to the "online" messages for the 100th time for another 10 seconds
4) If I am assault, I hit zero on numpad and chat with other players, often providing annoying sarcastic comments about robotic "gl hf" messages or something mean like that cause I'm already tired of waiting.
5) If I am on a large map, I wait for almost a minute to get into position.
6) I actually play the game for 5 minutes or so maybe. Woot!
7) When the game actually finishes, I wait for 10 seconds for the game to acknowledge that the last person on my team died or that cap completed so I can leave in peace.
8) Because I am annoyed about the fact that I'll have to wait again, I rant on chat about opposing team saying "gg" in all-chat knwoing that my team played terrible and that it wasn't a good game at all because it presented no challenge for them. good game is when teams are balanced, and for some reason it's hard for people to understand that.

I think that MWO really needs to work on speeding up action and getting us there or prolonging games, but not by making maps obnoxiously big.

OK, so your biggest gripe about the game is you have to wait a grand total of a minute and ten seconds before you can shoot anything because it has to load? This community is unbelievable.

I have an idea, how about both teams spawn together in the same spot. There ya go, instant action.

Wow, you must die really fast to have games that are so quick.

Sure, why have any tactics in the game, maybe even just a dice roll decides if you or I won... We don't even need to fight.

So what I'm getting from this thread is that you don't really want discussion, you want people to agree with you.

They don't, the majority of players don't, and that's the simple fact.

The suggestion to try other games may actually be worthwhile--Hawken gives a similar experience without the large expanses and load-times. No judgement here. One of the reasons I play MWO and not Hawken is BECAUSE of the pacing; if that's bothering you, maybe you should try a faster-paced game.

Ten second wait time is canon. TT rounds are ten seconds.

The wait times whilst searching are directly related to:
-how many people have just pressed launch
-what their ELO;s are
-and a myriad other things match maker has to do to create a game.

Search times were much shorter during closed beta when there was no matchmaker, or weight balanced matches. The search time I would think would be beyond PGI's control, simply because there is a lot of info to process.

We often drop two 8 man teams against each other. Even though there may be no other teams on it can still take 2 mins for match maker to decide that the only option is to match the only 2 teams available. What should really be a no brainer, is apparently quite a bit of work.

The animation screen actually replaces a scrambled or black screen that we used to have to sit through, all the while hoping it wasn't a black screen of death bug. Once loaded you would have to wait whilst everybody else's client loaded and dropped mechs into the game. If you were first in you could literally watch mechs drop into game. The start up sequence runs over the top of all the other processes needed to launch and of itself wastes no more time than would be used if it wasn't there.

You probably also have to wait for the person with the slowest machine and worst ping to load before the servers can start as everybody has to be on the same page before moving out.

In short if you get rid of ELO match maker search times will be better, but the game quality drop may not be to your liking as there will be more ROFLstomps than ever.

War Thunder has similar loading times.

Considering all the other issues with this game this is not one to worry about.

Chill out and I will see you in the battle field.

In case you have forgotten, you wrote it yourself in your OP.

And I never said you were a bad player. You said that. I was merely pointing out that if the 10 second start up sequence is 1/9 of your battle time then you must die really quick.

What posters also did not mention as one of the main reasons why the startup sequence was added (apart from players wanting Bithin' Betty again) was that teamshooting at match start was really common before the addition.

Players would be browsing in a different windown and suddenly jerk back to MWO after hearing other mechs starting to move by clicking their mouse... and would instantly shoot the player infront of them in the back with an Alphastrike.

After the addition of the startup sequence, this went down drastically. The reason for this is, that players get an Audio notification withthe sequence and a visual notification where the windown in the background moves about while pilot is pressing the various buttons. This gives the player about 10 seconds where they can safely click back to MWO without nearly destroying some poor sod who happens to have been spawned infront of them.

No, saying GG is a sign of sportsmanship. Why is it so hard for people to understand that?

Just because the game was bad for YOU does not mean that it wasn't good for others, win or lose.

God - I hate to see you back in the old days playing a game over a 32k modem.

Would you rather play WOW and sit there for a good 15 minutes flying across the continent - just so you can get to your next quest, and after you talk to a guy you have to FLY all the way back another 15 minutes down the drain....

This game is NOT a persistent world. So you will not be in constant action all the time, there is no little mech warrior running around stations, or between quests.

Even in BT persistent world it took days to get from one world to the next to attack it. So just think of the wait time as your travel time from one world to the next.

OP, sounds like you might be a fan of a Solaris-mode, if PGI ever comes up with it? Drop into a small arena, instant action?

The maps and modes they currently provide don't give us that, it's true, but maybe future modes will.

With the maps/modes we have, instant action just isn't terribly conducive, especially not if we're getting the simulated 'feel' of dropping, positioning, strategizing.

Just do me a favor and stop spreading stupidity on this forum. Since you can't do the math, you can refer to one of my other posts where I did the math for you. It is (only) 1/9 of the 23% of idle time.

Just because the game was bad for YOU does not mean that it wasn't good for others, win or lose.

Saying gg to another team that's been utterly decimated due to consistent mistakes on their part is a cynical way to rub it in their face. Neither the winning nor the losing team had a "good game" in that case. The "sportsmanship" part holds true if the other team gave meaningful resistance and you enjoyed the game cause hte oponent was worthy. In that case, both teams can "gg". It is only my opinon but I do understand that the players may be split 50/50 on where "gg" is used appropriately depending on which game they came from.

Can't really compare to other games because even in WOW, I figure you have a choice to where you want to go. Here you don't

But you'd rather have your drink and click "launch" when you are really ready...

Anyways due to lack of ideas and analysis on the matchmaking algorithm, i'll post my own thoughts:
1) The matchmaking algorithm is poorly written. "Searching" takes less time in off hours for me, and longer during prime hours. There are more players during prime hours, hence it should be easier to find a matching group. This indicates that the complexity of the algorithm is probably O(n), where it should be much less than even O(log n).

2) Even if partial match is gotten, the player should be given a choice to continue "searching" or accept a partial match that may put them in a disadvantage against the opposing team, to avoid the wait.

3) To streamline the drop sequence and reduce wait time, as players load they could be being dropped from orbit (the first ones to load within 10 seconds will appear on the ground). The drop location should probably be next to the heaviest mech on the team or where the concentration of teammates is largest. That way, 1 minute into the match (or less on smaller maps) all mechs are already in a position to fight. This will also make it possible to "drop" the 8th player in teams that are missing one (7 vs 8 matches) or where a player disconnects at start. Ofcourse this dropping should not occur after certain match time has passed. This drop also occurs visually - a mech is landing using orbital rockets and dust is raised at the drop point so that friendly mechs are aware. Once the mech lands, the orbital rockets are detached.

imo, he does have a point.

looking for server -> wating for other ppl -> mech powering up -> walking to enemy -> end map delay -> lobby loading

imo that list shuld be :

looking for server -> wating for other ppl -> walking to enemy -> fight

I meen the mech powering up was awsome the first 5 times, but 500 times later, not to awsome, just a waste of time, and tbh an annoyance

So you'd rather have a 10 second longer load-time, without the mech startup? Because that's what it is, last minute loading.
