So, needing a MW fix yesterday to sooth my "pendingness", I loaded up MW4: Mercs... Then I got an old X52 stick and throttle out (since it is a twisty stick and my Warthog is not)...
The game sees the X52, and the basic functions work... But for the life of me I cannot get the game setup to allow me to map anything additional to any of the stick/throttle buttons. For example, I wanted to map Forward/Reverse toggle to a button on my throttle... I can click on and highlight the box in the options (in the joystick column) that I want to map... It turns orange, the same as the boxes in the keyboard column do when clicked, but nothing happens when I try to click the button I want to map. I can't type anything into the box... For the keyboard column, once the box is highlighted you just press whatever key you want mapped to the function, but nothing seems to work for the joystick column...
I'm at a loss... Anyone know what I am doing wrong? Or is it simply not possible?

So I loaded up MW4 Mercs...

1: Use Mouse and Keybord.
2: Use Mouse and Keybord.
3: If you have an xbox 360 joystick (the one from saitek I think) you can use it for your computer too since its USB (and Microsoft). Has all the buttons you need and twists too.
4: Use Mouse and Keybord (Mouse for turning the legs, A and D for twisting the torso, works real good).
You using the Mektek verstion of MW4 Mercs? (its free) If so, awsome since they have a working multiplayer still, and a ton of new mechs added (and guns too).

I did the same thing with the Mektek version. While I use a mouse and not a joystick, the options settings seem to be sketchy in Mercenaries. I didn't have any issues with MW4, so perhaps it has something to do with Mercs. I did a lot of research to fix my options but in the end saving over and over, and/or retrying the error popup that plagued me was the way to go, even if the options didn't seem to save.
I suggest making sure your drivers for both motherboard and joystick are up to date.
A last thing to try is manually editing the Options.ini file (save a copy of the original of course)

Ya gotta get a litte crafty for this. I too have the X-52 and gotta have my MW4 fixes.
Here's what I did:
Rebind all of the default controls to various keys. Even though most already are, by default theres alot of overlapping ones. You just gotta be sure everything you want on you stick is mapped to one key that isn't shared by another command.
You may also need to try and clear all the X-52's commands that are in place. You could end up with multiple functions on one button otherwise.
Open up the Saitek profile editor and build yourself a profile using your new bindings. I like to run MW4 in a small window and put it side-by-side with the editor. You can also write down everything you bound, but I'm pretty sure nobody has those antique pencil thingy's anymore.
Save this profile somewhere safe. I used mine for years till a HDD fail made me do it again
The X-52, as old as it is, is still much newer than MW4. MW4 just simply won't recognize all of it's inputs. I've spent many hours trying to get it to work. Trust me, using the profile editor is the quickest and easiest way. And a saitek profile is one tiny file you can stash away. If you're like me, you may reinstall MW4 on many occasions, and saving it will keep half your work.
I can give you a quick rundown of the profile editor if you need it?
Option 2: steal the Artemis prototype
