Hear me out on this one:

I've seen and observed a lot of issues with Friendly Fire both ingame and on these forums, with people suggesting everything from banning Team Killers to people accidently being killed during combat. I think that the easiest way to deal with all of these issues is to simply turn Friendly Fire off.

Cons:
1) It's not "Mechwarrior" as most people know it, and detracts from the realism of the game.

2) This space reserved for the discussion

Pros:

1) Removes the necessity of long lines of code dealing with how to handle friendly fire/team killings, as well as the dilemma of having to seperate out true FF incidents (which shouldn't necessarily be punished) from the team killing incidents by trigger happy new players and or griefers.

2) Promotes more intensive firefights. Yes, you can fire your missles into the back of your friendly Atlas while hiding behind him, but all you're doing is wasting ammo. Now, instead of good players holding fire because their lasers will carve out the teammate in front of them, they'll be encouraged to engage.

3) Doesn't punish the players. Anytime you can set the game so that the players see a positive effect instead of a negative one, they'll enjoy it more.

All that needs to be said.

I've not seen much in the way of Friendly fire rules in tabletop. Only with indirect weapons do you see it. Even then, that's more splash damage. It's not an issue in table top because you're assumed to be firing at the proper target.

No thanks.

Pilots just need to have better fire discipline.

And it's not an issue here because we know real quick if someone's firing at the wrong target. And we're not playing Carebears Hug Hill, so we know such things can happen.

Well...most of us anyway. Some folks seem to think they're playing Hug Hill, but they'll get over that or move on to something more suited to their delicate sensibilities.

Never! This is a mech SIM, and that's why should be realistic. Watch your fire, please - that's it.

I just hate it when the match starts and some ****** behind you starts firing his PPCs at you and puts you in yellow (or orange!) before you even spot any enemy mechs.

The fact is, skilled pilots rarely hit friendlies; it's always the noobs and trolls.

Quite simple, kill him.

As much as it is ridiculous to be purposefully TK'd. There are other solutions for that than removing friendly fire.

Removing it because someone accidentally shots you or you them, not a good enough reason.

I do think it would be cool to keep track of Friendly Fire. Have a stat that shows how many matches someone shoots a friendly. If it gets over 10% or something start penalizing their credit and xp gains. 20% and it's a major hit and it keeps going higher etc...

Edit: thought about it more. People could start griefing their "team" by running into friendly fire. So, this idea may not work at all. Pitty.

My fire discipline is usually good. I've had careless teammates frag me however or completely blow off the arms of my commando. It's a bigger issue when you're a smaller mech.

Punishing ff would be fine (maybe it takes away your reward, I don't know), but it needs to be in the game. Every pilot just needs to learn to watch their firing lines, and not to run in front of a friendly Awesome that's lining up his PPCs. Also be aware of "gun checks" at the start of the match. I often alpha my lasers to check heat when a match starts.

The pilot of the firing mech has responsibility to make sure his shots land on target. Blaming the victim because the pilot didn't posses situational awareness is a hell of a thing to do.

But really, so much simpler to remove FF entirely. Unnecessary headache.

Funny, because I'm arguing most of this from the "victim's" point of view. I've taken a boatload of hits from LRMs and snipers while darting around enemies and TAGging them...difference between me and you, I accept the consequences of my actions rather than asking the Devs to tailor the game to my desire to pay no attention to what I'm doing.

Changing the code to remove Friendly Fire is an unnecessary headache. By the way, how's your poll on that going?

Ooh, not even 10% in favor of going all Carebear. :)

Not trying to make my pitch to you. Or 20 or so founders who decided to pay for the game early. The game needs to appeal to a large player base. Have you never played Modern Warfare?

Good. Hope you're also not wasting time pitching it to the Developers, or you could be in for some disappointment.

Then I'll wake up from my nightmare, and go back to playing this game with its perpetual friendly fire. :)
