My centurion is a better heavy flanker than the dragon will ever be. That huge CT and low CT armor makes you an easy kill. I often prey on dragons because thye can't carry large weapons and a decent engine. So it is a zero risk 100% reward thing. I would recommend the quickdraw. They have the same armor but a smaller ct. Just carry 6 med lasers, JJ, STD 300, dhs, endo, etc. Then stomp all dragons in you path. Also 4 med lasers 2-3 srm6s are very strong with a std 300.

The Dragon is a niche mech, hard to make all round like a Cent. I've played both much and I love them. Dragon was my first mech in Closed beta (after getting smacked around in my founder's catapult too much), and I learned to hunt light cappers, harass and distract assaults and flanking lrm boats. It's what they are best at, brawling and getting caught in a firefight equals scrapped mech. It takes a long time getting used to, I'm still making stupid mistakes like not keeping an eye on the flanks or staying too close to the frontline brawlers... But the Dragon is really fun

I will go against the grain and say the Phracts are fast enough.
Like you, I bought the Founders pack and took the HBK. Its my favorite mech and I have played it more than everything else combined by a long margin. That being said, my other two highest played mechs are my Phracts and my Dragons.
Sure the Dragon is much faster, but the load outs are just not great, better now maybe as they work to reduce high alpha builds, but still quirky. I do like them, and enjoy quirky under powered rigs, but I would not pick it over the Phracts.
My Ilya is my second favorite mech, I have played it in many different configurations. Almost all of them are fun. The 3D is my second favorite, though I didnt play it as most do in a sniper, pop tart configuration. With speed tweak the Ilya is nearly as fast as the HBK, and very tough. Easy to run XL's in them, as they really just get center cored most times.
They are also fun to elite, as all Phracts are very playable, while the Dragons, well even to me were a bit painful to elite up.
If you are only using Cbills, I would try the Phracts. If you are using MC, I might suggest the Flame, though I would still suggest the Ilya over it.
I play three mechs right now, HBK 4G, Ilya and my Pretty Baby. Actuall, for decent speed, the Awesomes are rather fun too. Of course, most will question your choice of using them. smile.
I have no Quick Draw experience.

I tried that thing it's not right for me (dps ballistics on the arms aren't suited imho). Btw, adding FF will allow you to bump a lot of armor in that thing DRG-5N, it's rather dangerous to go around with so low rating in the legs

If your priority is ballistics you want a dragon. however keep in mind the QD has better missile options, dragons are limited to the ct only.
I also would not count out the Jagger A, though at a top speed of 86kph its not really fast.

The issue isn't the big ct, it's those wannabe snipers that miss it and accidentally get you in one of the legs.. then the first light or anybody else that will target and see you've got a leg stripped, will almost certainly try to cripple your mobility or take a chance for an ammo crit-shot

CTF-3D. No missiles, but ample options from 2PPC+Gauss to 2 UAC5 / AC20 + MLas, 2*Gauss, anything, really, has JJs, durable with 280/300 STD engine and very responsive and quick with 325/340 XL. The very nice 3PPC and incidentally the 4 LL (lol imba! j/k) builds were nerfed with the recent ghost heat crab system, but still it's a beast of a mech. I'm even conemplating buying another, just to have an XL sniper and a STD brawler ready so I don't have to rebuild between drops . Dragons are meh, really, Quickdraw has no distinct character, Catapults and Jagers are somewhat different roles than you seek. Or you could go 350 XL Victor, and pretend it's a heavy .

Gwilly has been running a Cataphract lately that has me impressed - faster than my Centurions
-He has a 340? I think? XL engine, and 4 Large lasers.
That is about all I know about his build though - If you see him in a game you could message him, but don't be surprised if he doesn't answer - he types slow, so avoids paying much attention to the chat (which sounds much worse than it really is )
My centurion run at about 81 pre speed tweak and he was outrunning me - AND outgunning me
