Standard K2 (or, more likely, standard with upgrades) might actually be good now. Arm-mounted PPCs = you can ridgehump very effectively, and some people think that machine guns no longer suck. It's pretty directly out-competed by the 3D, but what heavy isn't?
AC/40 is still good, too - you just have to chain-fire most of the time.

I know what you mean with the 3D, it's next on my list. That and the thunderbolt in october. I've been toying around with more builds and I think I will give this a try:

chain firing the ppc's and saving the UAC5 for anything that get's too close.
I actually haven't had any problems with dual er ppc's and no heatsinks. I never fire unless I my shot is lined up, and in pubs that isn't too hard since alot of people still stand still lol. Even hitting Lights isn't too much of a problem.
My current build is 2 AC 5's with 120 rounds total, one extra DHS, and dual er ppc's. I would use 2 UAC5's, but I don't like sacrificing speed. It makes for a strong support mech , which I currently feel the Cat's are suited for; they have good firepower, but their large CT makes it too easy to kill them in a brawl. That's just my feelings for 'em so far. If I want to brawl, there are better mechs for the job. But for a support? my K2 has considerable power and the speed to get where I need to be to make it count.

for the man that loves heat and death. while the LL limit range and can be swapped for ERLL if one wishes, I've found I do more killing with the LL. Just me and my thoughts though. My best game ever was in this build. 6 kills, 700 dmg.

Post UAC/5 buff, I would highly recommend putting 2xLL + 2xUAC/5 in. Been running that in a Jagermech, does hilarious amounts of damage.
