Makes My Fan Run Damned Hot...

Any help to make my GPU run less hot? This is the only game I have which forces me to run on low settings. The fan runs hot as hell in a game even in low settings and the graphics are not exactly state of the art compared to other games I play, Day Z, Planetside 2, Eve Online, I would call these all on par with each other graphics wise. These other games don't need any where near as much attention from the GPU. Anyone know why it seems to use so much GPU power and any tips on cooling? The rigs quite new actually, (about a year and a half old).

Edit: Hell even the client window notches up the fan speed to 78% and P.C Core temp to 78%, nothing else I own does this in a client window.

This game murders GPUs, and it's not just for what you personally see, but for things like all the extra rendering the map does. There isn't a draw distance, like in some games. If it's on the map, it's rendered.

FIrst, what GPU/card are you running? Some have more problems than others.

Second, you want to get a program that allows you to manually control your GPU speeds. I suggest MSI afterburner, works like a charm for me.

TO give some perspective, I'm running a GeForce GTX 560. I run my fans at 80% speed whenever I play MWO, and I've also got 5 case fans and 2 fans mounted on my giant coolermaster CPU heat sink. I still run my gpu at about 65 degrees celsius.

It's just a game that's hard on video cards.

1. By default the combat engine runs in Full Screen mode, which then maxs out the GPU (hitting 100% GPU usage).
2. For players who are seeing 60+ FPS in Full Screen, use Full/normal window mode. Locks FPS at 60 thus reducing work load. Vsync On will do something similar.
3. Can use MSI Afterburner to lower GPU/Memory speed
4. In user.cfg (may need to create it if not present in main MWO folder) and add sys_MaxFps = 60 (or 50, 40, 30). Again, this will be based on the F9 shows as FPS in game. It can also be used to set the FPS in the mechbay).

Seems weird that just the client window alone will run the machine at the same level as it does when a match is in progress for me, it can't take that much graphical power to display a few mechs or the news in the little client window.
Never really looked at it before because my machine is pretty much silent at full usage.

On my 560ti the card will sit at around 32c at empty desktop, as soon as I start the client alone my temperature climbs to around 75c with gpu/mem/fan usage all jumping around 50-70%..it barely moves from that when a full screen match is actually running with explosions and beams everywhere. When it does climb the client seems to hold the machine at those higher levels until it I quit it and everything drops back idle levels.

No issues like that with any other game and all the other game launchers barely touch my machine.

Pretty much this for me... very strange even the client window increases temperature like hell. I have however fixed it myself. I bought some extra fans and now its sitting at about 65% temp, before I did this though at some points core temp ran to 95% at one point and my GPU stopped working. That hit off panic alarms as I wasn't about to fry my card for a game. The extra fan however has really, really improved it. Much happier now. Oh and by the way, I use a gaming laptop (shock horror I know). A toshiba satellite L855 with Intel core i7, and 6 gigs of ram, Radeon HD 7670 is GPU, which is about a 4 gig card I believe. Anyway, the fan I bought for it which goes underneath it and sucks cold air into it like a boss has sorted me out. Oh and reducing the FPS to about 40. Normally I would of just stopped playing, but I do really enjoy this game and have already met some great guys to play with.

I wish they would optimize the rendering more; my laptop is on the beefier side of laptops and I run all other games just fine, except this... just the same as almost everybody else.

The fan I got is a Belkin cooling fan for laptops. Look it up, really worth it and sorted me out a treat mate. Still, somethings up with the power needed even when not in match.

Download MSI Afterburner, then go to options-> fan->fan profile (the labels might be slightly different, I'm writing this on my iPad and going by memory) and from there you can set your GPU fan to operate at different speeds depending on the GPU temperature (you have to manually move the "points" on the temp vs. fan speed graph, and once you've done that click on the "use custom fan profile" button on the main screen of Afterburner - once done you should see the fan-percentage slider section is highlighted in green). If you're confused on the process let me know and I can take some screen caps to walk you through it.

To keep mine nice and frosty, I have the fans jump up to 100% as soon as the temps hit 72c. Your rig might run a little louder, but you'll be putting a lot less stress on your GPU, and the reduction in heat should even help your CPU stay a bit cooler (assuming it's air cooled and not liquid).

Afterburner is totally free and an amazing utility for GPU monitoring, overclocking, and even video/screenshot capture. I highly recommend it.

MWO is especially tough on hardware, as are most games that run on CryEngine.
