You saying start over to get Cadet Bonus again? I've, now off Cadet, amassed about 3m Cbills so I think I can just keep moving forward. Mistakes are good ;) and I have a good JNR and an AC2 spammer in my bays if I need.

What I want is a mech that is flexible--with a decent mid range kit-that isn't paper thin like the BJ for skirmishing.
Cent, Hunch, Dragon, are on my radar.

Remove the Dragon from the list. Pretend it doesn't exist for now.

The Hunchback would be the first choice because none of its variants require XL Engines or come with XL Engines. The Centurion only has 3 non-Hero variants one has the XL in it and costs as much as 2 or 3 Hunchbacks.

Remember you get 1 day of Premium Time Free! You might want to use it. Also 3 day Premium time is really cheap this weekend. You could get away with spending $7 use your Free Premium, Buy 3 day, and still have MC left over to buy 2 bays. I figure this was worth at least mentioning.

The Hunchback 4SP is the most commonly suggested variant.

If you go this route remember to sell the Standard 200 engine. You'll never need it and you'll get 600k back for it.

EDIT: I always put AMS ammo in head and forgot... AGAIN... that this HBK has that Energy Slot.

if you like hunchbacks try to unlock 3 variants in the pilot lab, this will give you more advantages

Although I'm totally onboard with the use the Hunchback and earn XP plus CBills with it first plan.

Jagermechs are kinda similar to 2 of the Blackjacks, 4G and 4H Hunchbacks but as you note the Jager needs the XL engines to run a decent weapon loadout where the others don't.

The Quickdraw is actually similar to the BJ-1X Trial and BJ-3 plus the Hunchback 4J and 4SP, Energy and Missile, also the Quickdraw can run near the same as a Hunchbacks speed then the 5K could do pure Energy like the 2 Blackjacks mentioned and the HBK-4P.

But I agree with using the Hunchbacks, trying 3 of them allows trying different weapons (Ballistic vs Missile), one of the few that allows this and you can tell which of the weapons you like, you just have to learn how to deal with the big ol' hunch target except on the 4SP.

So been trying out the trial mechs and Im really liking the Atlas the LRMs paired with the gauss rifle are great. If the gauss goes down I still have MLs. Recommendations to get?

I know its an assault, but the Victor plays like medium, just 30 tons heavier. You can kit it out with an engine large enough to make it go 86kph with jump capability, while still keeping a Gauss rifle, 3 medium lasers, and 10 SRM tubes available to kill things.

Its probably the most fun mech I've played in a long time. Very expensive c-bill wise though, the setup I'm talking about will run 15-16 million.

@DeadSandstorm - Johnny brings up a fine point which is you should probably get the DDC variant first if you really want to go the Atlas route. Which few people suggest because it can be a decidedly brutal experience for a new player.

@Johnny Reb - I still want to meet up with that Atlas while I'm in my Catapult A1... preferably a dark corner of the map where we can just amuse ourselves... alone :)

Well, cReddIt has arena night every Monday 10-12 EST which is 1v1, everyone is welcome. Not sure how we would do that type of duel but nevertheless im sure there is a way.

What is your playstyle? What do you enjoy the most or what are you best at? That will determine what your next purchase should be.

Do you prefer brawling? Long range sniping or support? Scouting/capping? Interferrence/close support? Tanking? Describe what you prefer and you can get more accurate advice.

Trial mechs are a last resort option. IMO, they are next to worthless for new players...they overload you with too many weapon options in a chasis that you cannot modify to fit your playstyle. The only thing they are good for is getting a feel for how a mech handles (rangle of motion, view area, ect..).

Find a Medium or Heavy mech you can live with whether or not it is optimized to your playstyle and stick with it for a while. Build up some XP in it and save your CBills. The goal is to determine what style of play you prefer. Heavier and more expensive is not always better...I have been owned by pilots in Commandos many times. You need to determine what your playstyle is before you can get useful advice on here.

If I had to recommend a specific mech to start with, I would say a Hunchback or Catapult. Both mechs offer a wide range of customization options and handle pretty well. They are probably the best Jack-of-all-trade models in the game.

If you like the Blackjacks but feel they lack staying power, the obvious choice is a Jager, since BJs are just mini Jags.

The JM6-S is the most versatile, giving 4 ballistic and four energy. This allows great builds such as: (click for links)

2xAC/5s, 2xLL, 2xML

4xLL, 4xMG

4xAC/2, 2xML (one of the highest DPS builds in-game)

2xAC/10, 4xML

Ect. The list goes on and on. It's a very versatile, survivable and high damage output mech. It's pretty expensive to really tweak it out, but, well worth it. XL engines are a personal option. It's undeniable that they are more vulnerable. They die faster. However, they allow you to move faster (allowing you to get to cover or out maneuver an enemy, actually making them more survivable in the hands of a skilled pilot) and they also allow a LOT more free tonnage to bring more pain to a fight. If you can kill your enemy faster, it doesn't matter how vulnerable your engine may be.

All personal opinion and preference. I prefer XLs because I would rather cause the most damage I can before dropping. In my builds I run XLs almost exclusively and have tweaked my builds so that 700-900 damage rounds are regular.

Also, in leveling you skills through three mechs to get to elite skills, the JM6-S Jag also provides a great missle boat with 30 missle tubes, 2 ballistic slots and 2 energy. Another very versatile chassis.

Personally, I run Jenners, Centurions, Cataphract and Victors pretty exclusively right now for each respective weight class.

If you like both the Hunchback and Blackjack, this is a BJ-1 build I think is really good. Gauss, 3ML's, and while it does have an XL, it has Jumpjets. If you liked the 1X, check out the BJ-1. B)

To make money, you have to spend money.

Until MWO starts giving you money for performing a certain role in the battlefield, Assaults are your best option.

They will generate the most cash for an inexperienced player (you do a lot of damage and you can get a lot of kills).

Going in the support role first, then gradually getting yourself into the brawl is the best options. If you find you hate brawling, then stick to support.
