I know it seems to bug out sometimes and forget to fire, or it gets drunk and responds very late, but there are other times when I'm really, really glad it's there.

As a light, I'll even hang out in a friendly atlas' shadow to reduce the damage he takes from LRMs while he's in the open pummeling someone. And it's not like I have armor to spare, either.

I even bring it along when I have an ECM. Sometimes the missiles' target is outside my bubble or my ECM is being countered.

Yet it seems like only 1/3 or so of mechs have this little gadget.

I basically carry it on anything that goes under 90kph or has an XL engine. If I'm fast enough then I can usually get to cover quickly enough before getting nailed, and if I have an XL I'm already fragile enough as it is. But you're right, it seems like not enough people use it.

I LOVE it when there are like 5+ AMS firing at once.

If theres spare tonnage after everything else and i dont have an XL engine, sure. Otherwise probably not.

lrms are a bit underpowered compared to other weapons so while AMS is really good at what it does, im not too worried about getting extra protection from lrms and would rther put that towards a bigger engine or armor to avoid/soak everything else.

The only mech i don't mount an ams on is my atlas d-dc. Because it has a standard 360 engine (those fu ckers are heavy) and with ecm i find i don't need ams too much. And 64.4 kph allows me to feel like a heavy mech so i can reach cover quite fast.

I tend not to run it - I always find that if I'm out in the open without quick access to cover and preferably an ECM bubble, I'm gonna have a bad time anyway.

I've never used AMS. I usually pilot mediums or fast heavy mechs so I'm agile enough to take cover.

It is because it takes up 1.5 tons (with ammo) and two crit slots while only being situationally effective.

I mean it is nice to have but not once while under LRM fire have a ever felt that my mech survived because I had an AMS. Usually when I die to LRMs it is because I am getting swarmed and no amount of AMS is going to prevent that hurt from landing.
