hi folks, im a software engineer myself and found the problem. it seems that if u have a newer amd (for instance 8 core like me) and an avast antivirus, mwo wont start. the solution for me was to complete uninstall avast with for isntance the avast uninstall tool.
now the game just starts fine, as mostly always.
dear devs pls do some software quality insurance before releasing patches which need hotfixes again and many people flame on you, cause i rly like mwo. u just sometimes rly do crap with programming.
i know its very complicated, but dudes, you get your paychecks and are surely longer in the business of game development than me -.- shame on you

I am unwilling to uninstall Avast. So, that means I wait.

S!
Tried setting AVAST scan/realtime scan to ignore MWO folder and it's EXE and see if that helps?

I have an fx8320 with HD7950 on Windows 8 with Avast and I haven't had any trouble. So maybe the problem is something else?

Microsoft Security Essentials is free, works fine and does not cause any problems (that I have found yet) with other programs. It also uses far less system resources than larger 3rd party security suites. Seriously though, just make strong passwords, change them monthly and don't download or open files / webpages that are not from a legit source.

There were already posts about it by or before 9:30am (Sticky) the same date as the OP post.
There are two options
1 - un-install Avast! and reboot your PC.
2 - "Instead of uninstalling and reinstalling Avast open Avast, go to settings and under the troubleshooting section uncheck the box for "Enable hardware-assisted visualization". Then reboot and you should be able to launch MWO with no problems.
Amd + Avast! = Stuck On Please Wait

I "own" the Avast internet security program. I am unwilling to compromise my computer system to play a limited game.
I can wait until they fix what they broke.
It is NOTHING to do with an AMD multicore CPU OR Avast - it is something they hosed in their program.
