Another vote here for Hunchback 4SP. The speed, firepower, and survivability are balanced pretty well. It will let you learn the game from a mid-point in many aspects. It's one of the cheapest mechs to get into as well. Love it.

Light mechs are tricky. If you want to pilot them then XL engine is a must have on them. Save weight and gain speed that way. XL engines are very expensive but worth every cbill for lights. For firs light I would say Jenner F the laser variant. Buy the biggest xl engine and cram up 6 medium lasers and 2-3 jump jets and see that thing fly
.
If you toss $15 in the pot, you can get a Jenner FC that already has the best XL engine. 4.8million C bills for just the engine, which is on top of the cost of the Jenner Chassis (about 4 mill, too, iirc). Easier than trying to save up, and you get a small bonus to exp earned in it.
If you throw $10 to the charity you get a souped up Jenner D with the best XL engine, and you help with cancer research and honor a fallen warrior. So there's that.

The Cicada 3M is the only Medium with ECM and has also 1 Ballistic Slot and 4 Energy Slots.
It can go high Speed and is save to use with an XL Engine.
As it has low Armor you will learn to stay low on the aggro list - to avoid enemy fire is as urgent as for every other Medium.
I wont promote a Medium Missile Boat be it LRM or SRM until PGI gets them balanced well.

I started in a Jenner, although I really like them and they are fun, I would avoid a light to start with because you will get so used to the speed of it and the leeway in getting out of trouble it allows you that you won't want to pilot anything else and even mediums will feel frighteningly slow, its a real punch to the face to pilot heavies after lights. So I think you should start in a medium as they are the hardest to play, they aren't really fast enough to escape because heavies are just as fast in a lot of cases and have sort of restrictive loadouts because they are in a tweener tonnage range where you kind of still have to use XL engines or you can't equip ****. These handicaps will teach you to stick with your team, use the heavies as meat shields, develop situational awareness, and make the rest of the game feel like an easier breath of fresh air when you graduate to something else.
So while we're handicapping ourselves, I'd say go for a trebuchet or blackjack. Be a contrarian, to hell with the heavy cheese ppc ******** meta. Yea BJs are kinda squishy because thier side torsos are vulnerable and they are hard to outfit at 45 tons, but if you get good with that......just think it'll be like running around for a month with ankle and wrist weights on and then you take them off when you pilot something more cheesy like everyone else and be a badass. Trebuchets really aren't that bad I don't get what the problem supposedly is with them. I have tons of fun in my BJ-1 with 4medium pulse lasers and an LB-10 X AC. Only two tons of ammo and it runs a bit hot at 1.15 but all jj capable mechs are fun to me. But honestly you shouldn't listen to me unless your the kind of guy who wasted 11 months of his life masterinmg Dark Souls and likes a good challenge. I'm probably getting a Dragon next or a Cicada just out of spite.
