I got me a logitech controller for my laptop to play Batman and after realizing that I could use it on here I plugged it in. Got some of the controls how I want using X and B as left and right and the D pad for firing but there are some bugs and was wondering if anyone had any advice.

most players have found that game pads and joysticks alike are incredibly hard to use in game. Two reasons, aiming is key and there is no controller support for anything other than the keyboard and mouse. I'm certainly not telling you that you must play like everyone else, but I like to see people succeed and my guess is that you'll be in for a rough road if you insist on using a gamepad.

That being said, I'm sure one of the forum masters will have info on a good program or layout for play.

You're way better using the mouse to aim with, especially lasers. Whenever I get to spectate someone trying to trace with their lasers on a faster moving target with a pad/stick it gives me ulcers.

Never occurred to to try and use a controller with this game. I use one with some games. Some games work better, but Mouse+Keyboard just fit this game so well.

I'm not a good player but I use a Logitech g13 pad. I have the mech movement tied to the joystick which I operate with my thumb. The rest of the keys I program to what ever I want that feels comfortable. This allows me to still aim with my mouse.

Well maybe not ulcers immediately, but seeing someone in my team fire several lasers 20 times and do maybe 10 damage total is about all I can take before I ragequit.

The difference between aiming with a mouse in this game and aiming with a joystick/controller is immense.

I'm not saying you can't use a controller, but you're immediately putting yourself at a massive disadvantage.

I've tried using my own Logitech controller for this game (I've had it since I got it to play Battlezone II with, I was upset when it didn't work too well for MW4 but then...) when I tried it, I found I could customize my controls just the way I liked, which was nice.
But while testing it in the Testing Grounds, I found it simply wasn't as quick and easy as the keyboard/mouse combo controls I'd gotten used to; I suppose I've outgrown my physical discomfort and now the controller just seems inferior. Comfortable and easy enough to customize, but just not worth the extra effort. XD

Will need to know more about the controller.

On a side note, if you have a cheap PS3 controller with a permanent cord, they work quite nicely in the computer and have amazing compatibility with MWO. (The official controllers are not as compatible; but a cheap 20 dollar or less thing from Walmart is amazing.) The brand I use is Snakebyte.

This match was done using it. You can even see when I opted for "Rushed" thumb jerks (snap shot on the Locust) and when I went instead for tiny thumb movements.

It's astonishingly accurate.

Joystick isn't picked up until the match begins obviously. Though you could use the menus with it too.

There is Turning and Throttle.
Then there is Analog Throttle and Analog Turning.

Use the Analog one.

Use a separate stick for Analog Pitch and Twist.

This is a sample from my Throttle stick and flight stick combination (a different controller from that mentioned earlier).

Axis Z is the throttle stick. Slider 0 is the left/right pedals on the throttlestick. Axis X and Y are the left/right and forward/back on my flight stick.

Thank finally got it to work I think its just my control thats lame or super sensitive because it would bind another key instead or not bind or register a key when i press.

I'd stick with mouse & KB bro, it's superior.

I really wanted to use the joystick for MWO - I've been wanting a mech sim, and to me a game isn't a sim unless you use a joystick. I was using an old Sidewinder 2, and was trying to set it up so I could use the throttle for speed, and the stick to aim.

It was terrible. I mean really terrible. Ulcers terrible. There is a slight dead zone at the middle of the joystick, which means that fine control is very difficult. I tried every adjustment I could, and it just didn't work. I found that I could use LRMs and Streaks okay, but I just couldn't use any direct fire weapon effectively.

I ended up going off-hand joystick and mouse. I use the x and y of the joystick for throttle and turning, and it has 4 buttons plus the hat switch which let me access a lot of commands without taking my hand of the stick. I then upgraded my mouse to a Naga Hex, and adding all of the thumb buttons let me get the rest of the controls that I needed under my hands. Perfection.

Sometimes its not the controller. In my case latency (250-300) makes it hard for me to snipe and fight lights. It's still hard for me to figure out where they actually are and lead accordingly.

Having played various first person shooters on PC and consoles, I can say that the mouse and keyboard combo is definitely better for the average gamer, but with enough practice the limitations of gamepads and joysticks and the like become a non issue.
I know I could pull off headshots with the same ease on my old Xbox ( playing games without aim assist ) as I would playing the same games on my PC, but it takes a lot more practice to get the same degree of precision.

i remember using joystick + throttle controller in MW2,3,4....but i never played those online, I suspect it wouldn't work in the fast paced environment to well.

I actually used to play Duke 3d with keyboard + joystick competitively and was actually really good..but that was DOS + Kali days.
