That being said, I'm sure one of the forum masters will have info on a good program or layout for play.

I'm not saying you can't use a controller, but you're immediately putting yourself at a massive disadvantage.

But while testing it in the Testing Grounds, I found it simply wasn't as quick and easy as the keyboard/mouse combo controls I'd gotten used to; I suppose I've outgrown my physical discomfort and now the controller just seems inferior. Comfortable and easy enough to customize, but just not worth the extra effort. XD

Will need to know more about the controller.
On a side note, if you have a cheap PS3 controller with a permanent cord, they work quite nicely in the computer and have amazing compatibility with MWO. (The official controllers are not as compatible; but a cheap 20 dollar or less thing from Walmart is amazing.) The brand I use is Snakebyte.
This match was done using it. You can even see when I opted for "Rushed" thumb jerks (snap shot on the Locust) and when I went instead for tiny thumb movements.
It's astonishingly accurate.
Joystick isn't picked up until the match begins obviously. Though you could use the menus with it too.

There is Turning and Throttle.
Then there is Analog Throttle and Analog Turning.
Use the Analog one.
Use a separate stick for Analog Pitch and Twist.

This is a sample from my Throttle stick and flight stick combination (a different controller from that mentioned earlier).
Axis Z is the throttle stick. Slider 0 is the left/right pedals on the throttlestick. Axis X and Y are the left/right and forward/back on my flight stick.

Thank finally got it to work I think its just my control thats lame or super sensitive because it would bind another key instead or not bind or register a key when i press.

It was terrible. I mean really terrible. Ulcers terrible. There is a slight dead zone at the middle of the joystick, which means that fine control is very difficult. I tried every adjustment I could, and it just didn't work. I found that I could use LRMs and Streaks okay, but I just couldn't use any direct fire weapon effectively.
I ended up going off-hand joystick and mouse. I use the x and y of the joystick for throttle and turning, and it has 4 buttons plus the hat switch which let me access a lot of commands without taking my hand of the stick. I then upgraded my mouse to a Naga Hex, and adding all of the thumb buttons let me get the rest of the controls that I needed under my hands. Perfection.

Sometimes its not the controller. In my case latency (250-300) makes it hard for me to snipe and fight lights. It's still hard for me to figure out where they actually are and lead accordingly.

I know I could pull off headshots with the same ease on my old Xbox ( playing games without aim assist ) as I would playing the same games on my PC, but it takes a lot more practice to get the same degree of precision.

I actually used to play Duke 3d with keyboard + joystick competitively and was actually really good..but that was DOS + Kali days.
