Easy. They don't have real sensors. They have forward facing sensors. They took the visual detection of Battletech and made it the MWO radar (as frequently BT's radar/sensors fluctuate in range and detection is less than reliable in megamek for anything not directly in front of you).
Thus, you can remain mostly undetected so long as you are not visually seen by the enemy.
I confess switching modes would be nice, but largely it'd be fairly pointless with the design of sensors in this game.
Meanwhile, I recommend looking at Spike Brave's channel for tutorials and an introduction into MWO.
