I only use a laptop for everything. And it's a desktop replacement gaming laptop that is more than capable of running any game currently on the market at 30+ FPS at the highest settings (Except Anno 2070, man, F that game). It even runs the original Supreme Commander at full settings with over 1000 units on the screen without any slowdown. So I don't see where the laptop hate comes from. Maybe you are jaded and didn't have any fun when you had a laptop, but a good laptop these days is at least comparable to a near-high-end desktop.

Heat and lack of customization.Gaming is not the most demanding thing you can do on a computer, and with the slowing down of hardware requirements i mentioned saying you 'cant' game on a laptop is silly. But this very thread demonstrates one of the reasons its still a better idea to avoid laptops for gaming. I build computers and you have different considerations for machines intended for different purposes. A laptop is just not well balanced for gaming due to the aforementioned things like heat, the fact that you are going to want a good big monitor and keyboard and mouse anyway so a serious laptop gaming setup would just have the laptop off to the side with the other stuff plugged into it anyway, etc. Its just not the most efficient use of the platform, and its not the most efficient platform for the use. 'can' doesnt means 'should' or 'its a good idea to do so'.


None of this is really relevant to the thread, my original post was fairly light hearted and as ive already pointed out contained the sentament that it was fine to play on a laptop (in secret! =P), then people come in defending laptops. Well, its not true, there are no real advantages other than portability and a bunch of disadvantages to gaming on a laptop. So for the sake of stopping some impressionable person from thinking it would be a great idea to go out and get a 'gaming laptop' ive got to continue pointing this out. So for the sake of the impressionable and those who dont know what they are doing the general meme that you should stick to a desktop must be enforced.

Odd - I have the Optimus dual card thing as well but the MWO diagnostic tool picked up my GT540M without issue.

look... it boils down to if you have a good laptop and a good place to put it... i tottally agree that heat is a serious issue but im playing on a laptop now and am able to play skyrim,D3,Carrier command (beta), etc... all on the highest graphics setting

Minus all the laptop for gaming argument (funny enough, we're a house divided. My laptop is for school, desktop for gaming. My wife games on her laptop. XD) I have one, giant looming question.

You are aware that in the box where you pasted all of your computer's information... you can write in it, right? I mean, someone's got to be looking at the things. Why didn't you write your situation in there and let them know that you have Optimus tech and the specs on your card(s)?

I agree with you 100% man i realize laptops can bee a pain if you dont have a good place for them to be and as far as battarry life... yea i can get bout 5 min on my gaming laptop but this thing is a beast. but honostley the only reason i got a gaming laptop is so i can move it around as my carryon in the airport a normal computer usally is the better (and more affordable) choice

Long answer there have been very few keys sent out for the amount of interest showed in the game. You are not a precious unique snowflake. Many of us have great machines and are still not in. People seem to be overlooking one thing. If you are making a game it makes more sense to have a large spectrum of PCs tested out to see if more people can handle the game. It is a business after all and the more people they can get to play the more money they make in the long run.

Bump. I got a Dell XPS 17 L702X with Nvidia Optimus as well. The system profiler showed up as Intel HD 3000, and I can't edit it now -- the real graphics card is a 3GB Nvidia GT 555M, more than enough power.

My laptop has a G210M and it works okay for most games. The Optimus tech is good in theory but it's hard to update drivers for it. The last time I did everything broke and I had to use the integrated part until I was able to factory rollback. I can't install beta drivers and the newest GeForce drivers don't apply to it.

You should be okay with the 540m, definitely. You are still eligible for beta regardless of system spec, at least I would imagine so.

Hard to update? I dunno, I just installed the beta driver that came out two days ago and it runs fine.
