So, I often hear people trash MechAssault, and I'm sure, to some extent, MA2: Lone Wolf but...

I really liked MechAssault 2. I thought it was freakin' Fun!

Now, I won't go to length defending MechAssault, but I will defend MA2: Lone Wolf (look who has too much time on his hands).

So, my case for MechAssault 2. It was released in 2004. At the time, MechWarrior 4 had been released in November of 2000, with expansions following the years after (Mercs coming out in 2002, same year as XboX's MechAssault).

So, 2 years after Mercenaries, you got a less serious console version. It played, in my opinion at the time, a bit like GTA: MechWarrior. You could run around on foot, get squashed by mechs, steal unattended mechs at enemy camps, hack and take over mechs and vehicles via the BA armor suit... I mean... What wasn't to LIKE!?!? You could drive tanks, fly VTOLs. I remember taking on the personal challenge of completing certain missions in the armored suit exclusively.

Now, unfortunately, I didn't get to play the online component of MA2 until years later on the 360, just before they shut down support for original XboX games on XBL, but it looked AWESOME! It had the Inner Sphere map, factions, planets with % that reflected battle progression... I mean... Come ON!

Say what you want about MechAssault, but MechAssault 2 was not only fun, but introduced, and made accessible, the franchise to a whole new audience that might not have been aware of it before.

I loved MechAssault 2 for what it was. MechWarrior was out there, and I played that too, but when I wanted to goof around on the couch with some buddies, there was MechAssault 2; MechWarrior Lite.

Most of the hate isn't directed at the actual game itself. As a standalone mech combat game, it was rather fun.

But it was not a Mechwarrior game.

That's where the problem was. It ignored Canon, whether tabletop or novels, to a large degree. It simplified combat to twitch run and gunning more than the simulated tactical feel that Mechwarrior should be. It's the same problem with MOST of the Mechwarrior games, that the attempt to make them more accessible, also destroys the "Sim" style that the core fans loved.

Heheheh. Yeah. I AM asking for it, ain't I. Bring it on! In fact, here's some fuel for the fire:

I wouldn't mind them developing a MechAssault 3. Especially if it took everything that was great about MA2, and expanded on it. Online Galactic conflict, more support units, ticket system like the Battlefront/Battlefield series, maybe add the ability to attack as a foot soldier, BA hacking support... that would RAUK!

Maybe after MWO launches and takes over the internet, they'll have time.

I agree with you 100%. It wasn't a "core" game. It was a pretty "light" version of the universe. I think I recognized this right away, which was the reason I enjoyed it more than maybe some. You certainly would have been disappointed if you thought it was "MechWarrior" for Mechwarrior it was not but... it was pretty fun if you had 10 mins and a buddy to split-screen with. Especially the wave survival games.

I thought they got the scale down pretty good. Things looked HUGE when on foot or in a BA, especially the dropship, then things got smaller in mechs, depending on the size.

Before MA, MW4 was already a big step toward arcadizing the whole BT genre and alot of players dreaded what appeared to be a downward spiral into dumbed-down games with no more sims in the future.. a fate worse than death. When MA was released followed by MA2, they seemed to confirm it. Next step would be some stupid Lego Mechwarrior console game....

The MAs were no doubt fun and were each successful titles but had actually nothing to do with BT. Only the mechs vaguely resembled classic BT Mechs.

But, if MA brought you and others to the community and if console mech games are the exception rather than the rule (woohoo MWO!) then Im fine with that.

It had some good music, and yes, killing mechs in battle armor was fun, killing them on foot with satchel charges was even more fun.

Hey, Lego Mechwarrior would be alright in my book. The Lego games Telltale is putting out are actually pretty good games.

Im sorry I wasn't as hooked on MA2 as I was on MA that was honestly my first xbl game I played online just from a fun standpoint it was amazing. More I read it doesnt follow BT that well but it was just a good game to throw down and kill stuff with.

I for one loved Mech Assault and MechAssault 2: Lonen Wolf, while it was loosely based on BT it was the game that introduced me to MechWarrior and have been waiting for a sequal ever since they stopped support of original xbox live games. I tried many other similar games to MechWarrior and MechAssault but nothing ever drew me back the BT universe. While I don't know much about the lore that doesn't stop me from enjoying the gameplay of both MechAssault and the more traditional sim style of MechWarrior.

I agree that the MA bashing is undeserved.

It was not mechwarrior, but it never was trying to be, that is why it was called mechassault. It also had some things going for it that mechwarrior did not. Like destructible environments, better graphics, bas, and even the ability to run on foot next to a giant behemoth battlemech. Destructable environments being a big plus, it was hella fun blowing stuff up with so much firepower at your finger tips. Remember the city levels in mechwarrior 4? Imagine being able to level a sky scraper.

The fact that it ignored canon is a minus, but mech warrior 4 (as far as I know) did so to a certain degree by making up its own story within the battletech universe.

I agree! Let's not bash Lego games either! 'course, I think it helps if you have kids, but the newest one, LEGO Batman 2: DC Super Heroes, sounds pretty boss. Got the adult stuff for the adults without being obvious to the kids. Just like the cartoons of yesteryear. LEGO Mechwarrior actually sounds like it could be some hilarious fun.

I COMPLETELY forgot about that! Destructible environments before Battlefield was touting it like it was THEIR idea! I remember leveling whole cities with the BA artillery piece.

[loving sigh] ...and satchel charges. Yes. Nothing like walking around as a squishy sack of flesh waiting to be vaporized, except SNEAKING around as a squishy sack laying traps on patrol routes.

... that game was so ahead of its time ;p

I played both MA and MA2. Dropping canon harder than an orbital defense cannon drops an inbound DropShip was bad, but the "upgrade" system bugged me. Yes, I know it made it easier for new people to pick up, but when 4 fully-upgraded MGs can take out anything besides a boss (yeah, the bosses were cool, but... >.<) in seconds? Eh...

It did look amazing, I admit. And again, I played both numerous times. I wish I'd had Xbox Live so I could have played MA2 and been able to really enjoy the multiplayer aspect. Though I had a fairly large group of gamer buddies, all but one (the one who introduced me to MechWarrior 3 back in the day) only played Halo, so no MA parties happened.

If they want to make MA3, then fine. I don't own anything newer (or more expensive) than a Wii right now as far as consoles, so I'll probably never see it. As long as MWO is a proper Sim game, then MA folks can do what they want.

OH, one final complaint: The Ragnarok. I do like that they tried to use the whole Star League cache excuse, but seriously. But I guess it's not as big of a deal once they introduced the big spider and... whatever that thing was at the end of MA2.

EDIT: But yes, it was still fun.

Lol. Yeah. The Ragnarok was pretty ridiculous with its lava gun. To me it was like... The original Twisted Metal. Or Vigilante 8. But a bit more to it. Just subing mech for vehicles. Good ol' fashion bash-'em-up. You want smart? Go tabletop, or MechCommander. You want sim, go MechWarrior.

You want a quikie before Physics 2B AP, or Computer Science 202, fire up MechAssault.

Actually the MechAssault games were pretty damn fun as long as you turned your brain off and ignored the vast disregard for canon.

It wasn't a Mechwarrior game but it was a great game none the less. In a way, it was it's own game; It was Mechassault. And to someone on the outside looking in, that was a great thing. Someone who had no connections to the story or previous Mechwarrior games could sit down and fall in love in a few minutes. Curious, I wonder if, and how, many people this game attracted to the franchise. I still have strong memories of playing this game with friends and having a blast. Later on I showed them Mechwarrior 3. Some liked it, some didn't. Still an all around great experience.

Mechassault is like a ******* child no one wants to talk about or acknowledge. Its like Jon Snow, he's cool and you dont know why but you just like him, even though everyone makes fun of him, and hardly anyone acknowledges his existence.

However I didn't like Mechassault

I didn't have any idea there was even a such thing as battletech/mechwarrior until i bought an Xbox back in 2002 and it came with MechAssault and i really liked it. Then i bought the second MechAssault and wondered why a third wasn't made (I didn't have xbox live.) And i thought the series had just died out until some guy in a random battle on WOT said something about Mechwarrior Online.

And that was the best thing i got out of WOT.

Did you ever try to destroy the Star Adder (Northwind) with an Elemental suit?

Lets just say that it still hurts for me to think about...
