I have an XL engine (225 or right around that) with DHS and Endosteel but standard armor.
Be careful with XL engines. Some mechs are way more vulnerable with them and lead to dying quickly. I've never piloted a BJ, but I would think I wouldn't want one in there if it were me. Always check the hitboxes...here: http://mwomercs.com/...x-localisation/ to see if you're mech is abnormally vulnerable before putting an XL engine in it.

I have an AMS loaded in it cause I hate the missle boats popping me but I can always pull that out.
I wouldn't pull out AMS. If you have the tonnage for it, it is worth it to have. The Assaults that you are wingmanning for will appreciate the free cover fire. Glad you are on board, and don't get discouraged, all of us got killed and had low numbers at first.

Ok new player, but old man. I am working hard at this game and have been on for maybe 4-5 days now. I have been trying the different mechs and bought a Blackjack (maybe a mistake it is hard as hell to play) but have been using different weapon loadouts and trying different tactics.

The blackjack is a reasonable choice. They are cheap so you can easily buy 3 variants to master. Having your mechs mastered will make them perform much, much better.

But first off make sure you turn arm lock and throttle decay off in your options menu.

Unlocking your arms will make aiming up and down much easier. You arms can move faster then your torso. Most mechs can move their arms left to right and up and down, your blackjack only can move them up or down.

Throttle decay means you're either moving at full speed or not at all. By turning it off you can set you throttle to a specific level. This allow much easier turning around a target. If you are running to fast to keep up with your aim, throttle down. If you're behind, throttle up.

Second, hop onto TeamSpeak. There is a good mature community going on Comstar NA and NGNG. Tell people you're new and they'll show you the ropes.

Thanks for all the advice guys it has really helped. I am still working with the mouse sensitivity but no I am fine tuning it and it is a thing of wonder. I can actually get the target lined up or led and hit something. I am also playing with the throttle decay and have found that for me it is best to have on unless I am going to be moving on my own. Following and supporting heavies means stopping and startin and slowing down. I also have reconfigured the mech to take off the PPC's and put on a combination of MPL and ML. Just seems easier to me to follow the big guys, protect their six and pop away with the Lasers. I will try to get the link to the config up, but you have all given great advice. Now just need to practice and then find a group to play with consistently cause the pugs can have maximum suckage.
