I think an important aspect of 3PV hasn't made it into the debate: the client side nature of 3PV combined with the complete lack of client side security.

3PV arm lock? Hackable.
3PV shutdown limitation? Hackable.
3PV drone? Hackable.
Future 3PV cooldown? Hackable.

Who will do it first?

Are you sure its all client ?

I mean, they could easily force a server check/update (like when firing and moving etc) couldnt they ?

Basically when you press F4 to go into 3pv right now, I would have thought your just sending the "command" to the server, and it will then "set" your client into 3pv as long as all the conditions are met......(not shutdown etc). So there would be a slight delay for high ping / laggy players changing views.

Exactly like when you pressed fire (before HSR) and had a random firing delay depending on your lag/ping.

Like when you set 100% throttle, the server is also playing that out as well as your client. The server then gives you updates of where you "really" are and then warps / adjusts you. It doesn't rely on where your client thinks it is, they client relys on the server telling it.

Is it even possible under those conditions ?

What your saying almost sounds like people should have already hacked the shutdown and made it so you can instantly start backup, or instantly clear your heat.............sounds a little far fetched to me.

Unless of course your right and there is no server-side checks. :D

The server side checks don't matter in this case. For instance, the server side checks matter for firing weapons and whatnot, because the server has the final say in the state of the game.

Client side rendering is different. Our view of the game isn't streamed straight from the server according to the current game state. So hacking the server checks in this regard is effective. If the server tells my game client it's no longer in 3PV mode, I can safely ignore that message because there is no way to enforce it.

Hacking the game client to tell it I've teleported across the map is only visible to me, not to my teammates or enemies because the server disagrees with me, so this is a hack that isn't effective.

Basically, what I'm saying is you can hack whatever you want when it's related to graphics because of limits to current technology which constrain how current game clients are designed.

This came up a few weeks ago in a discussion I had on the boards about Seismic. Supposedly the server side constantly updates the client with the position of EVERY PLAYER AT ALL TIMES. I asked about a map hack, or template overlay hack, that could translate that info into a "seismic map" of the entire playing field. Whomever responded said that sounds like it could be done by listening in on the client-server communications and not be too detectable to the devs.

This could also be something done possibly for 3pv??? A dual screen output, one the one that you "play on" have server set you as 1pv for all condtions and firing... on 2nd "copied output" have an overlay hack that translates the data feed for 3pv? That way you play 1pv with all benefits, but glance over and have full field of view without blinky light, arm lock, etc, etc.

Some nefarious computer geek (read "enthusiast") please let us know if this is even possible. If it is, there is a security hole.

I posted details about that very same thing a while back. How "detectable" it is depends on how much effort the devs want to put into it. It's not detectable right now only because they've invested zero time in attempting to detect hacks. I gave Thomas exact instructions on how to detect an existing hack tool (look for allocated memory pages with certain permissions because the game client doesn't create them that way) and he wasn't interested.

So yes, it's possible. I don't know about all that dual screen output nonsense, all I know is I can patch out the limitations that are there if I wanted to. My sig is a little hint about the code that I write.

3PV, ghost heat, weapon balance, boats. In the end it doesn't matter if PGI can not or will not control cheaters. If this game gets a bad wrap for hacks and cheats its over with I matter how good the game is.

This topic doesn't belong in gameplay balance. Please see the appropriate threads regarding 3PV feedback.
Thanks.
