That'll last until more and more enterprising people start taking advantage of it to get an edge - which it does provide. Better situational awareness, especially when sniping/counter sniping. It can help in brawling to avoid getting flanked.
Right now though you don't see it because people are trying to pretend, very hard, that it's not there.

Clearly, you haven't played entire matches in 3PV. You are taking one slight advantage with the FOV and saying it out ways all of the nerfing that was done to 3PV. But no mater what is done to 3PV, that slight advantage with the FOV will always exist.

Slight advantage?
To be able to tell your teammates where the enemy are going and what mechs they are using, without any risk to yourself?
To watch someone over a ridge and popup to shoot him whenever his focus is away from where you are, only to hide again when he looks?
You might call that a slight advantage, i call it a wallhack.
If PGI give us a 1pv only queue i'll be happy.
If not then as far as i'm concerned MWO will become a game that i'll have a go of now and then...and never spend a penny on.

You don't have to play the entire match in 3PV, what sane person searching for an advantage would unless he's in a scout or similar anyway?
You can have extra tactical advantage for no penalty because you just press f4 when you want to glance at the minimap/take a tricky shot.
Slight advantage my arse.

I'd make that the 3rd person drone is a module. You unlock it with some symbolic amount of GXP (100/1000 to leave new players get it if they want or simply free) and some cbills to buy the module once to unlock it.
The Drone stays like it is now, but can be shot down (5/10 hp of health) and you're then unable to use it until the next match once it's destroyed (not necessarily a consumable but maybe a 10.000 cbills could be ok if it has to be made consumable).
Vision range is capped out at 750m with some sort of optical disturbance, exactly like night vision or thermal view are. If the player keep shaking view to render the drone hard to shoot, extreme blur kicks in to avoid the exploiting.
When in who knows what far in the horizon future, we'll be given CW and rooms to organize matches, there should be a nice option to disable the 3PV drone module in the organized matches. End of story.
The above it's because it really looks like we're going to live together with 3PV for a long time, since the number of players are deeply dropping and certainly there's no room for a 1PV only community segregation from 3PV ones. Sadly.

Except that even if a player finds that magic ridge or corner, maps are so small and median 'Mech speed so slow there's rarely any question of where the enemy team might be, especially if teammates have eliminated one or more possibilities. And as other posters keep pointing out, everyone can do this.
At any rate, now that the PGI LIED RUSS BULLOCK IS THE DEVIL AND TOOK YO SOOUUUL hysterics are petering out, it's helpful to see just how flimsy the manichean-absolute argument against really is. Gameplay just hasn't changed for most players.

Ok, but then everyone will lose drones due to LRM's or some splash damage which will get it down probably in 1st enemy engagement.

Hm since the drone is very in the rear of the mech and really tiny, I doubt that LRMs could seriously harm it.
Direct fire is the most probable cause of its destruction, therefore it's a tool that gives you an improved SA at the expense of losing it for the whole match if you keep it on too much. Then you may agree with me that it's quite small so I doubt that everyone will be shooting at the drone rather than trying to core you during battles, but if you keep abusing it to peek over the cover for free informational warfare, then I'm pretty sure you'll lose it for good.
This or ditch the feature completely (imho of course).

Go to ANY random building in say River City, where the building is wider than you, and slightly taller.
This is me in River City, in 1PV:
This is me, in the SAME spot, I did not move my legs, or torso, I merely hit F4 to toggle 3PV:
^THIS is the problem. I can see all of you coming down that road, where all I could previously see was the side of the building. Your seeing my pink fluffy bunny UAV means nothing. I just told my team to re-align to where you are coming from in Teamspeak. You can see my bunny, but you cannot do ANYTHING about the intel I just got, which I should NOT have unless I exposed myself to chasing fire.
Again, in the 12v12 competitive play that is supposedly coming, this is a deal breaker.
