I liked the look of the Pretty Baby, but I see a lot of negative opinions on the Awesome chassis. I am not too keen on missiles either, so that's another reason why I was put off getting it.

If you're looking for something cheesy (I guess your drawing to not too many different weapon groups), I'd recommend the Firebrand, which heavily relies on ballistics - a good thing IMO) or the Flame, which I like despite of it's giant center torso.
Edit: I see a lot of people recommending the Ilya. I suggest testing another Phract first, It's the only Mech I sold despite of completely mastering 3 chassis of it, because I hated it so much. Not saying, it's a bad mech, it's just not a Mech everyone will enjoy.

This. I run it, and a decent match nets me 500-750 damage, 2-4 kills, and a ton of assists. If I don't kill my targets, I tend to leave them pretty maimed.

Ilya Muromets currently fits the bill. The Firebrand is good too, though! And the Dragon Slayer is solid.
Ilya is certainly the "cheesiest" with it's strong focus on ballistic weapon type with room enough for three large ballistic weapons.
Also keep your eye open for whatever mech comes up for September, since the pattern now is "Hero mech first, regular variants later"

The Pretty Baby is arguably the worst Hero, though. The Death's Knell is probably technically worse, but it's very cheap at least. The PB is expensive and terrible.

Lots of people want brawlers, and the Pretty Baby makes a very awkward brawler. It relies heavily on its missiles to soften its targets long before it reaches them or before they reach you, and then it can take the enemies out with ease.
Awesomes are no wider than an Atlas, but given its lower armor and 'drooping side torsos' it does take hits more. Funny everyone complains about CT hits, which happens because it's easier to just take out the center than to strip its sides off. The Awesome chassis itself requires a common skill from closed beta that is completely lost on new players in this high alpha non-sense. In CB people couldn't fire all their weapons at once due to major heat issues. Thus it was common practice to try and twist between shots to take hits into the sides and arms when possible as you cool off.
Now, sadly, it's all "ZOMG I got to stare at the enemy until I die!"
Personally I love the Pretty Baby. It's a mech that only works with one or two play styles, and sadly neither style is popular.
That said, moving on... Muromets is pretty iconic. Dragon Slayer is about average. The Misery is a lot of fun but works best in pairs. If you got a friend, run them side by side for pure epic awesomeness. Mine runs AC/5, twin PPC, triple smalls. Super heat efficient. Back when there wasn't a penalty on alpha strikes, the same build using a UAC/5 and triple mediums went up against a 4 ER PPC Stalker and 4 PPC + Gauss Atlas and nearly won at a fighting range of no more than 90 meters with both of them hammering on me.
You will want to avoid the twin Dragons; they won't fit your playstyle.
Wait until the month changes, there will be another hero mech. Orion's also around the corner at some point.
In the mean time, enjoy this read which is a true story of a real match in MWO. Twin Miseries -- where the first one falls quickly -- against the Atlas Stalker cheese rigs before Paul's penalty system.

The Awesome is shaped like a barn door, and presents a very large target to the enemy. Better still, the Pretty Baby might be the hardest of the Awesomes to learn. I think the use of Awesomes has dropped off a lot now that the Victor is out. The Victor isn't as big a target, and you can have jump jets on it.
But, if you want "cheesy as hell" you can always get a Firebrand and fix it up with dual AC/20s.

Does the Firebrand do anything that you can't already do on one of the Cataphracts? (genuine question, I don't drive JN6s or CTFs)
Yes! Shoot over ridges without exposing your entire Mech. The CTF has a really low arm hang making it very difficult to shoot over a hill.

if you are looking for a hero "to farm", i would definitely advise for a heavy or assault.
Ilya is a really great mech, but so are misery and heavy metal.
you can earn tons and tons of cash with those.
but, and that is a big but, not everyone likes the playstyle that those mechs have.
if you are familiar with commandos, the Deaths Knell is an awesome variant, but it still is an commando. if you can't handle them, you can't handle the Knell.
same goes for the X-5 and the Wang: if you are not familiar with Cicadas, or not know how to use a shield arm, both heroes aren't for you.
i own all those 3, and am doing very well with all of them. probably best with the wang... it truly is an awesome mech if you know how wo handle it. one of the best mechs in the entire game actually, if you know how to keep your ac/20 alive.
the golden boy right now is in a BAD state because of the "damage magnet" that is its CT. do not buy it.
fang and flame are okish... one of them is far superior to the other, i can't remember which one. the reason for that is simple: it are dragons anyway, they die quickly. like with the mediums: if you are not familiar with dragons do not get one of those.
skilled people wreck havoc with those things, but well... dragons :S
THE go to heavy heroes are the firebrand and ilya. firebrand is an awesome mech to ridge hump, and ilya shreds other mechs really quick, especially cause UACs are so good right now.
the assaults earn good money anyway, so every assault makes a good hero.
the heavy metal is awesome because of JumpJets and those two weapon arms. poptarting and generally fighting is really great with that mech.
the misery is great for the ridge humping thing again, BUT the ballistic weapon is a bit low hung, so you have to expose yourself for that. the plus is that it is a stalker, and stalkers are generally great.
the dragon slayer is a bit weird... it is not a bad mech, but the other victors are mostly plain better.
and well the pretty baby is like i said a bad mech. awesomes are in a bad state anyway, and that mech has it's hardpoints ALL over the place... do not get it!

Cheapest hero mech and if you are half decent with medium lasers, you can do 300-400 dmg no sweat..
It is also cheap to fully upgrade with needing just an xl210 to reach top speed..
