So this module used to be useful with the old predator vision. You could zoom right in on thermal signatures and make great use of long range weapons like ER-PPCs and ER-Large Lasers. The change from coloured thermal to black/white thermal however killed this use for the grainy PiP 4x zoom.
So almost a year later down the road and I have to ask; why should I bother using this module when I could achieve the same results by placing a magnifying glass over my cross hairs. No really, I actually tried this and the magnifying glass has better zoom, is less pixelated, works consistently at all ranges and doesn't cost me 5k GXP and 2mil in C-Bills.

At the moment you ought not to use it. It's effectively a placeholder.
Hopefully it'll be changed sooner rather than later, but I suspect it's at minimum being pushed back until after launch in favor of higher priority things.

Garth admitted that picture in picture zoom was more difficult to code then they had expected. BUT he did also say he was pushing to have the old thermal imaging put in as modules.

It's almost like PGI made a module that they could not code correctly, perhaps their pride prevents them from removing it or making it into a straight zoom (drop the PiP) with no bugs...

The Mechromancer was one of many who sold the zoom mod after one game.

Its a CryEngine issue. Displaying a picture in a picture means rendering everything twice. Its why we don't have multiple monitors, rear view cameras, and the like. Someone over at MWLL said it best. CryEngine makes simple things hard, and incredibly hard things easy.

If that were the case then it might be useful again. Personally I have to agree with von Pilsner, the module is bad and if coding PiP with the CryEngine is so hard then why can't they just drop it and apply the zoom bonus to the regular zoom (Z key).

Simple temporary fixes are not for pgi, complicated very time consuming fixes that only half fix the issue are pgi's favorite!

Dead simple effective fix....3.5x zoom in the regular fashion enabled if you have the mod installed.

I just use it to headshot Atlas's, hopefully they aren't on my team because the HUD brackets could be from any mech within 100 meters to either side.
