I bet it cannot be worse than CTF or JM6 for brawling and I actualy love mechs with big CT where I can run XL w/o to be worry too much about destruction of side torsos(DRG,CPLT etc...) .
I rly loved Kintaro be4 'fix'...and now I have problems I am cored trough side torso too much.

Did you miss the part where he said jumpjets, more speed and armor?

Did you miss the part where i said heavy and he said assault?
Or the part where at the top end engines (300+) the extra 4.5 tons he has to play with go into the engine (to match the orion's speed) so any jumpjets or bonus armour means less weapons, ammo or heatsinks?

So it really is same speed OR jumpjets OR more armour.
While going up an entire weight class

EDIT: I don't mean to be as combative as that sounds but since tonnage limits are coming (and they always were) it makes more sense to me to do the same with a lower tonnage instead of going up in tonnage as the guy suggested

Sounds like the Orion suffers from the Awesome syndrome - CT is a damage magnet.

Hmm, I think I'll pass.

I dont own the Orion yet, but was looking here to see about Xl or not. Looks like yes, XL is fine.

From playing against them, they take a beating better then an awesome when piloted by the normal Joe that just stands there and looks at you as you blast him in the face, the Awesome takes 95% of dmg to CT that way. The Orion has a slim enough stance that SRms spread to side torso some, LRM fire also spreads a little. Lasers and other direct fire, it is pretty easy to CT hit them unless they are mobile and actively piloting for defense.

Basically, I think much like an Awesome, it performs really well in the hands of a good pilot- and by good i dont mean good shot, i mean very aware of the battle and his own movement. people that do well in Dragons, Awesome, maybe Treb- they will do well in an Orion. People that like to march forward and alpha away probably will ***** about CT size because they refuse to give up their AC20 and PPC's for an Xl and some LL. Sometimes less is more. Dragon style play requires speed, awareness. Big guns and zerg blob stand and shoot gets you cored with 150 dmg done.

XL is fine, but if they don't change the CT, then you can forget brawling in it. If you're already comfortable in an AWS, then the Orion could be your mech. It plays better on a medium distance, i.e. strictly outside of AC20/SRM range.

the ON1-VA is actually pretty interesting, giving it some interesting abilities with SRMs.

ON1-VA

Though watching dave on NGNGtv play a protector I dont know how well it will do as a brawler, it has a catapults cockpit.

Here, I think this might work a bit better.

My first, and most unfortunate experience, with the Orion was when I dropped in a pug with a full lance or Orions. They obviously were a 4man premade. All I could think of was "Sweet, a premade with all Orions, these guys must know what they're doing." What they were doing was apparently eating a big back of shot in the face. The whole lance was wiped almost immediately and we went on to an ignoble steamrolling.

After a hot start in my own 1K, out-fitted like a Marauder, it's been slim pickings since.

Pseudo Marauder

Where the AWS is wide, the OR is tall. Really tall, with a significant difference between pilot POV & the angle the arm mounted weapons fire from. It's very different from the other heavies in this regard, probably more similar to an Atlas, & even then I feel like there's a wider difference between the OR's cockpit & arm-mounted weapons.

I know someone said it's good for sniping... but only if no one is looking at you. You have to expose so much of the mech to unmask your weapons that I'd say it's only mediocre for sniping. A STK or JGR will eat you alive.

Even though it's 75 tons, it feels like it's much squishier. Quite unfortunate.

This is what I came up with for a brawler.

I like SRM's and this seems like it would be a fun mech to try. I am an accomplished AWS pilot so I think this would work ok.

Picked up the K earlier this week. After a bit of fiddling with the stock loadout, and went through my inventory and slapped on some spare parts I had. Here it is.

And here's how it performs:

2x Large laser
2x medium laser
AC 10
XL 350.
I LOVE THIS MECH. I wish the protector had one more energy slot, so I could mimic this with my protector, but hot damn. Stay at mid range and plug away. averaging in the 600s with it. I might actually keep this after I max out my 3 orion chassis to roll with the protector.

The Orion-V is the best LRM-Mech I ever had!

3ALRM15, TAG, BAP, 1MLas, 11t Ammo, AMS... At a Speed of 71km/h... Yay! Damg up to 900.

The K I do not really like... Maybe Brawling is not my Playstyle...

the orion really REALY needs the kintaro treatment...the CT is a damage magnet and the arms are small and provide little protection no matter how you twist...

I wouldnt mind a CT rework, but I am having a good time in the K. Albeit I only played a few matches with the K, but have a lot in the protector.

This pretty obvious build is a mimic of the Atlas-RS (just better missiles tubes than his big brother) and works very well, if you have speed tweak unlocked

Hmm - that build looks a little 'all over the place'... It could work if you like lots of weapon groups...

Highly focused precision damage build. You're going to want to sit back for some time until it becomes necessary to move in. The asymmetry is necessary for protecting your two major weapon groups, your LL and your GR. If they start taking damage, then there will be problems.

You will want a zoom module to sneak in those long-range shots.

With AMS ammo in your cockpit you run the risk of a cockpit critical when the armor is gone (machine-gunning at the close of a match). Moving the ammo to another location might help, for example your leg. I doubt anyone will really go for the legs as you have only AMS ammo to any critical damage. Plus, you will survice an ammo explosion to your leg.

A Gauss riffle in your side torso introduces a risk. I'd recommend putting CASE there to avoid the exploding Gauss damage going to your CT (as point out below, CASE + XL is useless. If you go to the XL325 you can throw another DHS in the engine and free some criticals. With less armor to the rear you can increase your front armor, but you need to watch your back even more (nothing new here).

I also put one DHS in your right arm to reduce critical damage to a weapon but not in your shield arm, plus all gauss ammo to the riffle for better chances against critting the riffle.

So, staying close to your build:

Umm... wut?
The legs are the first target for just about any mech (except for the Hunchback, Atlas and HIghlander where you can take out nearly the whole damage potential with one side torso). Comnbine that with the lowered leg armour of your build and any half way decent player will be legging you as soon as he realises that. The cockpit is just about the safest position on any mech (probably not the Catapult ) for explosive ammunition. The hitboxes of legs are much, much larger than that of the cockpit and have the added problem of being hitable from any side of the mech. You cant hit the cockpit from the side or the back as opposed to the legs.
