According to Smurfy, these mechs have:

Identical engine cap
Identical torso / arm flexibility
Identical module capacity

The difference is hardpoints.

Protector:
CT: N/A
LT: 2 missile (4 tubes) 1 energy
RT: 2 ballistic
LA: 1 energy
RA: 1 energy

ON1-V:
CT: N/A
LT: 1 missile (15 tubes) 0 energy
RT: 2 ballistic
LA: 1 energy, 1 missile (4 tubes)
RA: 1 energy, 1 missile (4 tubes)

I have to say... I think I prefer the ON1-V. Or maybe I like them both equally. At any rate, although the Orion Protector looks awesome, I'm so happy that I'm not tempted to buy it.

Don't take stuff for the Orion variants besides the Protector on Smurfy or any other 'mech lab site as Gospel truth yet. The Protector is the only one we know definite stats for. It is all speculation and educated guessing on hardpoints, etc. on the other variants right now.

Smurfy takes the stats straight from the game files, and it got the Victors and Kintaros right (even when only the hero versions were available for sale) so we have no reason to doubt papa Smurfys.

The mechs are already in the game, they're just locked until next week. there will be no patch next week, only a little switch and you can buy them. Smurfy was right the last times so i would bet these are the right hardpoints.

BTW the protector feels very good and very heavy. And it seems to be XL friendly or no one got used to shoot that missile hunch. I run it with a 360XL and LBX and it's fun.

But you can also do 2x LBX or classic brawling, AC20, 3xMLs and 3xSRM6.

It runs hot with all those weapons, though. Basically, you can take some phract builds and run successfully.

I'm personally excited about the K and the VA. The K is a babby Atlas RS, and the VA can stuff a full brawling loadout into the RT and RA, letting you use the entire left side of your mech as shield and/or heatsink storage.

ON1-K looks great. 4 large lasers and 1 AC5. I'm guessing this will replace the 4 LL CPLT-K2 for most people

Are you sure you meant the ON1-VA? Because the ON1-M looks like a better choice for what you're describing. Two energy hardpoints in the right arm + the AC20 in the right torso... Then slap 3xSRM2 in the 3 missile slots, just in order to spam missiles at 2.5 second intervals when you need a backup weapon to unleash hell.
Either this or this?

Both are different stock. So therefore, that's enough difference for me, for stock Mech Challenge.

The real question is why use an Orion over a Victor? The Victor basically has the same hardpoints, 5 extra tons, jumpjets, and a bigger max engine.

Protector
3E, 2B, 2M hardpoints
75 tons
360 max engine
0 jumpjets
Suffers less movement penalties going uphill but no jumpjets

Dragon Slayer
3E, 2B, 2M hardpoints (same hardpoints but different layouts, and I think the DS has the better layout)
80 tons
400 max engine
4 jumpjets
Same torso/arm movement as Protector

Its like PGI isnt even trying to make mechs different anymore...

Well, not exactly. Unless all the Orions are essentially free and require no c-bills to purchase at all.

Note that the LT missile tubes seem to be 15 (for LRM) + 4 (for SRM4) so you're going to fire your SRM6s in two volleys (10+2).

Pairing up SRM's with mL's on the arms and the AC20 paired with an SRM on the torso. Beast.

If that is the case one of the ASRM6 is becoming an ASRM4 (and hopefully the tubes aren't messed up). Makes room for one more heatsink and I'll have 30 shots of LB10 and 30 of SRM so it's all good.

I think one day when mechs are matched by weight class the Orion will be better than the Victor. The Orion is top weight in heavy class where as the victor is at or near the bottom of the assault class.

M looks pretty promising for that as well :) With the VA, I was planning on shoving 2xSRM6+A and 1 MdLas in the RA to go with that RT AC/20, but it's hard to argue w/ asymmetrical brawler + zombie SRM6 haha.
