I found the following way of timing gauss charges useful:
  • Pair up the gauss rifle with ERLGL.
  • Group them together.
  • When you fire them, make sure you HOLD the mouse botton to charge the gauss; the lasers will fire first.
  • The duration of the laser is 1 second.
  • As soon as the laser beam disappears, release your botton, the gauss slug will rush out.

I practised with it a bit and I find that this build have the following advantages:
  • It makes it easier for me to time the gauss at mid/close range. As I will need to keep the lasers on the enemy and with the gauss speed buff, the gauss slug usually hit unless against very fast opponents.
  • It gives me a good visual aid for timing the gauss charge.
  • Against fast moving, long-range target, the ERLGL will still at least always do some damage.

It is still quite difficult to pop-tart with ERLGL+Gauss, but then again with the patch changes it is also difficult to pop-tart with PPC+Gauss. And of course, ERLGL is better at close range self defence than the PPC (which does no damage) and ERPPC (heat significantly reduce your DPS).

And ERLGL is 2 tons lighter. It is also less likely to be nerfed as it does not do pinpoint damage so it will not usually 1-shot so less people will whine about it.

Let me know what you think.

Interesting use. If you find it helpful, great. I think I would find myself having to often readjust aim after the end of the laser duration in order to account for any necessary lead on the gauss shot, though admittedly that is less a factor with the new higher speed imparted to the ferrous cannonball. But I'll try it.

I used a technique somewhat like this with a few of my weapongroups and I found that in a high heat situation it became a problem when I couldn't fire my low heat weaponry safely due to having bound them with my high heat weapons.

That being said I have this sudden urge to strap a TAG onto a gauss rifle and use it as a laser pointer.

haha, I did this the first day on my Firebrand since the Gauss/TAG can both go in the arm, it worked pretty well except you can use the tag even if the Gauss has not finished it's recycle time. So you have to play the Gauss mostly by sound.

Then just put the Gauss in another weapon group by itself in addition to the one paired with the laser.
