Thank you for the reply, Spheroid. I think the reason it will be done for the xboxone is that they already have a distribution system set up for getting the game out. I am assuming the equivalent of xbox live will be on the new console. I am inclined to believe that Microsoft wants as many goodies as they can have with their new system at launch, especially ones they aren't directly paying for. It would not be anything for them to have a link, such as those on steam, for a game that can be downloaded and played for free. This is wild speculation here, but I also do not think that Microsoft would have given them much choice.
I believe the reason for secrecy behind development would be that this is Mechwarrior. This game franchise goes back to 1989 on DOS. It has a fanatical following of dedicated fans, and I count myself as one of them. Now I imagine that fanbase learning the game is going to be ported to a console.
On a side note: I think this helps explain why the dev team has appeared to have been less than concerned about what the current player-base thinks. I mean no offense by that to PGI or the employees who haven't openly mocked us, but if you consider the appeal of a free to play for a casual console gamer who is bored on a Tuesday night, I think you will get my idea. This could bring a massive injection of players that maybe one in twenty might buy something is still a significant revenue opportunity.
