From my experience in the PUG, if you can convince your team to go on offense and commit to the attack in a tight formation, you win 9 times out of 10.
But invariably the most popular call is to stay back and be on defense. Every time I see a purely defensive posture, I feel like the team is cowering to a coming attack, and is usually unorganized or in disarray when it happens.
It's better to be the wolves than the herd.

You can win if you attack in a good formation - but you have just as good a chance of winning if you defend in a good formation. The key point is the good formation - anything else is difficult to generalise.
So yeah, your wolves could be coming up on a herd of disorganized sheep - or a determined bunch of farmers with semi-auto rifles.

Well actually defending is harder because to make a strong defense you need to be quite spread out to spot all areas of attack, as well you are not moving as much so you need more time to accelerate or even reverse into cover. If you attack your forces are closer together as well as being max speed until you spot enemies which means you can evade fire easier.
Good firing positions are important too, and usually the best firing positions are not close to the base (this is done on purpose) if you attack you will have a chance to gain those positions.

Offense, Offense, Offense. some maps do allow for small tactics like flanking but like Terra Therma and Tourmaline Desert, rushing up to the enemy as a group and then chasing them around is the only viable tactic.
in the older Mechwarrior games, you can pull a successful defense due to mission objectives and adequate map design. but in a game like this where we have 2 teams playing Rockem-Sockem-Mechwarrior...
...it's best to keep pounding that "Punch" button.
