Players pick a chassis or weight class like always, and press "Launch Mission", etc.
Then ELO picks the players and they are given the mission perameters which would at least tell them the Map and the faction (faction could be neutral, allied or their own). Mercs might get a fee for their services. The Mission Info could be delivered to players on a computer monitor. Something cool and 31st century looking that opens out of the UI side panel.
Then players are given 3-5 minutes for Mechlab with timer and launch warning countdown if they overstay. If they don't click "Ready" by the end of the final countdown, the Dropship leaves without them.
I am not sure if you have something like this planned or not, but I think this would get PUG players more involved and allow them to configure their mechs for the actual Map/Mission ahead. You might enable a voice comm or just a chat area with team and group chat while they are Mechlab-ing. Chat definately.
You could add more parameters as time goes by, but knowing the Map would enable Mechlab as a tactical element. That makes MechWarrior a much deeper game and puts players in control of alot of team involvment elements even though it's just a PUG. Perhaps they form a permanent group of Mercs etc. so they can be ranked against the other Units.
Anyway, I just wanted to suggest a way PUG players could play drops with mission parameters they could prepare for.
