I was reading this mech review thread, when I came across the following quotes about Stalker variants:

Quote

And even though those missile launchers have a limited number of tubes, the 3F can still push 60 LRMs in 2 waves, which lets this mech double as your big LRM platform if you so desire.

Quote

This variant is one of the best LRM platforms in the game. Twin 20 tube missile ports, and a pair of 6 tube, let it launch an impressive 50 LRMS in one salvo.

And this about the HGN-732:

Quote

It does only have one 20 tube missile launcher, instead of the typical 2, so LRM don’t buy it if you want to run LRMs.

This raised a question for me regarding missile tubes: if the tube count is less than the number of missiles you're trying to squeeze out of it, will the excess simply not come out or something?

You'll still fire the correct number of missiles but in multiple waves.

Lets say for example you equip a LRM 20 in a hard point with only 10 tubes. You'll still fire all 20 missiles but in two waves of 10.

How much time is between the waves? And is there any real disadvantage to this as opposed to them all being simultaneous?

It happens quickly, the big disadvantages are AMS gets to shoot at each wave and the target has a bit longer to get away from the secondary wave(s).

But on the flip-side, some builds go for multiple waves for maximum cockpit shake on the enemy and a seemingly-never-ending rain of missiles. A string of LRM5s on chainfire make for nearly nonstop LRM fire.

Personally missiles firing in two waves doesn't bother me.

The salvos occur 0.5 seconds apart. Firing an LRM10 through a 6 tube hardpoint would result in a salvo of 6 and 0.5 seconds later a salvo of 4.

The topic of Lurming (LRM Boating) is skull crushingly complicated.

To answer your specific question, it is both an advantage and disadvantage.

In an ideal setting you want to launch as many missiles as possible with smaller salvo sizes. This reduces AMS kills, reduces the time your target has to dodge, and delivers as much damage as possible to the targets middle i.e. the Center Torso.

When using a single LRM launcher I want as many tubes as I can get. When I have multiple LRM Launchers, I want as little tubes as I can get, or if I can, pack 5 LRM5's into the mech.

I'll copy the link to a video I find yesterday and hope the link works. It probably won't hyperlink, since I'm just typing the text in because the forum won't let me copy+paste for some bizarre reason. You should kind of find it self-explanatory.

Edit: **** it, and **** trying to edit this post. Glitchy-as-hell forum. SEarch "LRM20 Rave" on youtube.
