The biggest issue preventing adequate balance is the weapon slot system not being limited. As it stands now every mech in the game is a quasi-omnimech and until that changes, the post above is pretty much dead on.
Actually I have no problem with the current slot system as it's orders of magnitude more restrictive than TT, which had ZERO slot restrictions. There was no such thing as a "ballistic", "energy", or "Missile" hard point. If a slot was empty, and you had tonnage, you could stuff any weapon that would fit anywhere on your 'mech, including legs, INCLUDING rear firing weapons (because you could actually SEE and AIM behind yourself, PLEASE ADD THAT FEATURE TO THE GAME, PGI!!!)
I think the CURRENT hard point system is what has resulted so many 'cookie cutter' 'mechs. Once a new 'meta' is found, everyone goes to it. Without the hard point system, maybe, we'd see more variety. Then again, knowing human nature, maybe not. If someone figured out a really efficient build, say an Atlas with the largest possible engine, equipped with nothing 20 machine guns and 5 tons of ammo could evaporate other 'mechs in 2 seconds, well, we'd probably see nothing but THAT build in game...
