Seriously, why keep them just a slightly shorter duration beam? Make them the short ranged version of the PPC with an almost no duration beam. THe PPCs advantage over the large laser isn't in damage, it's in pin point damage, the Pulse lasers are supposed to be much mroe accurate though short ranged versions of the lasers. So make them instant hit, no length damage.

This makes them competitive.

No. They'll just become the next Alpha Strike FOTM.

I say increase refire rate by .25. That gives a small DPS boost, plus the improved accuracy compared to normal lasers. That, or a range boost.

No refire rate change or range boost will be enough. They're too heat inefficient. They do not put out enough damage for the heat they cause. Every bit about pulse lasers need to be looked at including a possible mechanic change.

Beam duration is good compromises. Shortening it to zero would eliminate the need for ballistics though So how about we try .5 or even .4 and see if use ticks up. Players will let PGI know what works.

This would also make them hotter to use and they are already pretty darn hot running.

Personally though not to lore, I would like to see them reduced in weight to 6 tons each to give you a bit more room for additonal heatsinks on your builds. Shorter beam duration would also work or as someone mentioned in an early thread, make them continuous fire kind of like a MG, something you could just hold down the trigger one until you overheat anyway.

or just reduce their heat by 1 pt? seems like a simple solution?

Actually...

I support this idea in a way. Except that instead of concentrating all the damage in a single beam, pulse lasers will fire a "shotgun spray" of beams that do 1 point of damage each in a tight cone. Hit probability is increased, potential damage is increased, with heat and cooldown time subject to tuning.

SOMETHING needs to be done to differentiate pulse lasers from regular lasers. Right now they function exactly the same as regular lasers with a shorter beam duration and higher heat/damage/weight. I want something that acts completely different...

Heh, I have started to use LPS now, duration is fine as is.

Reduce the duration of the Mpulse to 0.5 and reduce the heat by 1. MPulse become marginally more heat efficient in terms of raw damage than MLaser, but not excessively so. MPulse are CLOSE to where they need to be, I've been trying to fit them onto builds, but basically every build still uses MLasers.

A quicker recharge time would probably be best... that would be automatically balanced out by the quicker heat accumulation. So in a brawl you may be able to get 1 or 2 extra shots out before heat maxes out and you need to withdraw/cool down.
