I'm looking in to the Orion but with the latest trend in... well... bad mechs, I dunno about it.

there are a few fun looking variant as well.. im looking forward to trying out the VA

although there are those that always say something like there's nothing it cant do that a victor can do better. idk about that .. personally I hate the victor

That's my problem. I own 2 victors, was gonna get a third. I don't really like jumpjets though, i really only use em to climb hills on the mountains map. I was thinking of making a 2x LBX protector and using it as a brawler monster. But if the Victor is just 5 tons more and has a clearly harder to hit chassis... well...

Can anyone confirm how that CT hitbox works on the Orion? There is no Orion to test shoot at in the Testing Grounds.

If the side of that CT box is considered part of the side torso, then good, if not, I'm not going to waste my time. I'm sick of Mechs with {Scrap} CT hitboxes that stick out and are easily destroyed from the side despite "twisting."

I'm tempted to try it, since the orion was my main Mech to use in MW3.

its large-ish... I haven't noticed myself getting cored any faster then other mechs... its certainly not Kintaro level of damage magnet though..

Over all a fun mech imo. great for your jack of all trade builds with most variants.

I want to like the Orion, 75-tons of awesome right? The mech in play has not seemed to fill the rights spots in my playstyle, I get cored fast trying to use whatever ballistic I have in the torso and unless you invest in an engine the Orion is a pretty slow mech out of the box. I have tried two builds one with dual UAC/5s the other with an LB10x.

LB10x Build

Dual UAC/5 Build

With the Victor I have speed and manuverability as well as pretty solid hardpoints on the arms. Since you are stripping the JJs from your Victors you might enjoy the Orion more. The Orion can handle losing an arm or torso and still have most of it's weapons, Victors lose an arm and you lose either energy points or your ballistic weapon(s).

With the Orion try to spread the damage by torso twisting when under fire or your fat chest is going to go down fast.

While playing/fighting Protectors, it felt like I was an Awesome with a puffy chest that could get shot from the side. I need to have a friend join a game with me and shoot the mech to see where teh hitbox lies. If I fight an Orion with my AC/20 Victor....I know exactly where all of my rounds will land on that mech... the CT.

I think you would like it good spread of weapons some neat variants and for 75 Tons it is actualy pretty small. Im still not sure if Xl is the way to go because of the huge missle side torso but thats up to the player. Once you get speed tweek it might be worth it to throw in a big XL.

It's got a good mix of hardpoints in the Protector, M and K. The V and VA is mostly arms. I'll be getting the K and VA myself. I've run my Protector with STD engines and either 2xLRM15s and 2xER LL, 2xLL, 1xLB-10X, and 1xLRM15, and 2xER LL, 1xLRM15, and 1xSRM6.

They all did pretty good. The K I plan to set up with an AC/20, 2xML, and 2xSRM6 or pretty much the mini Atlas.

Opinions are so mixed about this mech...

Would anyone recommend it over a Cataphract? I'm trying to decide between the two.

Absolutely. I hated the Cataphract when I tried it. Couldn't get a good game out of it for the life of me. Protector, on the other hand, has been getting me some good games just out of the box. All I did to modify it was add Endo-Steel to put in a couple Heat Sinks in the engine and an AMS and kept the stock loadout otherwise. It's been fun.

The names are all from mobile suits from Gundam wing.

phract or orion is difficult.

if you want a straight ac20 brawler, you can fit 5 ML on the phract 1x but only 4 on the orion-k - on the other side, you can add some srms for mor alpha, but that'll make it a hot mech.

At the moment i have protector and -K and i'm struggling which should be the third. I wanted the VA for those 4 missile slots on the arms but i can't get a decent loadout with an XL360 (and with good cooling, of course).

The M looks meh... and the V... i don't know what to do with that.

Strange.

For me, the Orion feels like a small assault, while the Victor feels like a large heavy.

Go xl, with a 360 this thing is fast and twitchy. Side torsos are no issue, everything lands ct anyway.

Fun mech, i play it with max engine 2 ppc uac5 and srm6, or 2 large laser and the rest.

Ah, so this means I won't be touching the Orion until they fix that dumb CT hitbox logic. If you're really saying that center box, when hit from the side, registers as CT damage, then I ain't wasting my time on it.

Got burned on the stupid Blackjack, Dragon, and Awesome CT boxes. Never again.

If PGI really intends a player to stick an XL in a Mech just to mitigate stupid hitboxes, then these Mechs are just harder when using them in stock configs like I do.

After playing with the Orion I can safely say:

No it is not worth it. The CT is RIDICULOUS for a mid range heavy. It's Kintaro 2.0.

Stick with your Victors.
