I personally detest film grain, for me it's just a really bad decision from an artist, since it only makes graphics look muddier and uglier. Its purpose is apparently to make it look like you were watching a poor quality movie.

1) It doesn't really make me feel like I'm watching a movie...
2) ...which is a good thing, since I really don't want to feel like that.

However, I understand this is a personal opinion, although probably shared by many. This is why I believe it should be optional, since that's really really simple to do. Please post your opinions - or a working fix if you have one.

See picture below if you don't know what film grain is.

Here is a smaller version for those who may have trouble getting the above image to work properly:

how is it that you got the shots with no grain

also why grain at all

I noticed this a while back and it just makes the game totally look like butt

They went through all the trouble to have cryengine and then they put a crutch on the graphics?

I don't get it

Earlier it was possible to mod the grain out by replacing one file.

Try a map other then Caustic.

For some reason Caustic's Film Grain is in the Textures itself, Not with the cockpit.

When I run the No-Film I get a lot of Grain on the distance, but not in the ground textures.

I'll post a pic shortly.

You can still See Film grain in the distant Sky.

however the Up Close Mechs have no Film Grain, Neither do the buildings.

I don't know exactly what causes this, but I run the No-Grain mod that is available.

(IE: there is no Grain over EVERYTHING. just over distant objects.)

I cannot stand film grain in MW:O. It's just artificial noise and it looks awful.

The graphics are bad enough for this game, so I resort to SweetFX (which probably makes the film grain worse) to make it look like a modern game should. I tried downloading the patch people spoke of to remove film grain, but from my understanding the last update broke it. Yes, I installed it after the MW:O update with no success. Maybe the patch needs to be updated?

What is all this about DOF and how it removes film grain?

They go through the trouble to make nice textures and models and then throw artificial useless noise over it and this makes no sense to me.

When I first started the game I was confused because I kept trying to select something other than DX9. Wait, isn't this Cryengine? The first time I was walking through trees and not having any collision or destructible environments was a big WTF moment too.

Finally having DX11 will be a nice touch, but I have to admit I was disappointed from the visuals from the recent test they had. I didn't notice much of a difference, although it will at least allow them to do more going forward.

Probably it will allow them to finally support ATI video cards.

I noticed a significant visual difference. however, major improvements will likely take more time.

Looks at those trees in 50 meters! Is it a 2013-th year game??? It's disgusting.

I don't think that is grain related. That seems more of a sampling/filtering issue (maybe related with AA).

To me it's not a matetr of gameplay, or difficulty trackingtargets.
It's simply a health issue.

With film grain i have to force focus with my eyes every match, and the result is head ache and fatigues eyes after less than an hour of play.
Before you reply to this, i aknowledge you that i'm 41 years old and i'm afraid that 20 years ago i would never complain about this.
But growing old is natural, and i have to deal with it (you all will have to!) -_-

I play other games and i don't feel those symptoms.

PGI should consider this, it's not a cosmetic/graphic change i ask for, it's something a bit more serious.

And now! Add cockpit glass!

Pretty soon this will become a game Submarines, Using radar and their 100 Meter visual range to fight!

(GASP maybe its! GUNDAM! Minovsky Particles reducing radar down to visual range!)

I would just like to point out the hilarity of this as now we have muddy and dust covered canopies on the bog level.

Need I remind you that every pilot wears a neurohelmet? Maybe the grain is a piece of HUD on the helmet, just like the info of your target :P

Open or create a USER.CFG in your MWO directory: eg: C:\Piranha Games\MechWarrior Online\ or wherever you installed it.

gp_option_ShowCockpitGlass=0
r_DepthOfField=0
r_HDRGrainAmount=0.0

Put these lines in there, pretty self explanatory.
