I mean, I can understand if the mech gets hit by a super-high-caliber weapon like a gun emplacement or artillery, an artillery-sized laser gun. Anything dies in one hit from that. But when mechs kill each other in one chest shot, without even ripping a few limbs off first, I find it extremely boring and repetitive.
Which is also why I prefer mecha anime that focus on melee combat and projectile weapons, because for whatever reason in mecha anime, energy weapons are always one-shot-kill. Even though developing an effective armor against energy weapons shouldn't be that hard for a society capable of building giant humanoid fighting robots with energy weapons.
(Actually this is one pet peeve I have with Gundam - where mechs die in one hit more often than not)
You can't, like... Make armor that reflects energy beams or something?
