Edited. I bought the Orion today and this is what I've ended up going with. I dropped the engine down to a 330 XL, replaced the AC10 with the LB 10x, added AMS and a Tag. Got to be one of my more successful builds so far.

The Orion-K screams at you to put in that quad medium laser.

I went with a brawler build and went for a standard 300 engine, quad medium lasers, AC-20, and for good measure I put in a pair of LRM-5's so I would still be able to have something to fire at range, or even just make enemies duck as I try to close on them.

However, this is actually my favorite Orion. I know it has an XL engine and the new hitboxes are less XL friendly, but it has worked well for me. You just have to be careful with the heat.

Nothing but grief in my Orion - I'm sorry I ever bought it. Other mechs do a better job as has been stated, with both speed and armourment

Orion - Jack of all trades, Master of none.

Dunno if it has been said already but I do well with this loadout on the VA, the only Orion I really enjoyed piloting anyways

As for the other Orions... named em after veggies for a reason

Edit: Derp just clicked on Hans Von Lohman link, popular build it seems lol

i just got the protector and i really did not modify it much from stock got endo and DHS
weps
LRM 20 360missles
AC20-21 shots
2med las
I won almost every match with it and i get at least one to two kills a match
Maybe its my ELO but people seem trained to rush the LRM boats but when they rush me its AC20 time.
I mostly hang back and purposefully use up all my LRM ammo while protecting others on my team intervening with my short range weps if they are under attack near me. then once my LRM ammo is gone i brawl to the best of my ability.

You must master all three weapon types to pilot the Orion. It means mixing all three ranges as well which is certainly an ace level skill, but can be very rewarding if you can pull it off.

So, like the lore, the Orion is a jack of all trades, but can't do anything the best. Protector, V, VA, for this approach.

Protector and VA are my faves. My VA currently is a bit unusual, looks like this ON1-VA

but since it scored my highest match ever (Yeah, not a LEET match, but I am happy, especially since pugging means you don't have anyone to cover your tail)

and has scored quite some few 7-800+ point matches, I think I like it just fine the way it is.

My PROTECTOR
sometimes I switch out the srms for a ALRM15, but regardless, it has performed well. Have not broken 1000 damage to the best of my knowledge, but is usually 600+ damage if my team isn't rolled, and often much higher. It's been a solid 3 kill mech.

my Orion K is awesome
weps:
x2 mlas in one arm
x2 PPC in other
lrm 20 and lrm10 with artemis for missles
XL 280
rest of weight in either heat sinks or LRM ammo
ES and DHS of course

basically if someone gets close you are dead but the amount of hurt you can dish out is phenomenal
63 firepower with 30 of it pinpoint

if you manage your heat by either firing LRMS or your PPCs as distant opponents (as in alternating between them) you can sort of tenderize the
enemy mechs in certain components
enemy mech has an XL? shoot them with a few ppc blasts in a side torso then duck behind cover and spam LRMS till they pop.

Obviously lights are a pain but if you stay with the pack and communicate the min ranges on your LRMS and PPCs dont come into play
i use adv zoom and the gyro module and I a saving for target decay and seismic sensor

ON1-V
Swift, good range, does alright up close.

ON1-K
At first it had a little more armor, no Streaks, and no endo steel. You could probably drop a heat sink and shave half ton of armor (or 2 heat sinks and add half ton of armor) to toss in a BAP.

ON1-VA
At first I tried this with Streaks instead of LRMs, but I'm too impatient and kept trying to force contact with the enemy so I could, y'know, do something. I dropped the Streaks in favor of LRMs, and now I don't get shot to bits while trying to close with the enemy team, I hang back and soften people up with LRMs now. LRM5s are pretty nice, they cycle quickly, so I can throw 20 missiles every 3.25 seconds, or just chain fore them out to annoy.
