Where does my original equipment go when I buy something else to change it out with? I didn't click sell. Is there a storage tab somewhere?

Keeps in the game for later use in the same or another mech.

You are saying that the item stays in the game.....in the same or another mech; but what if you do not have another mech? Where does the equipment go?

It goes into your inventory.
go into the loadout tab for a mech, there is a QTY number next to every item in there, if it's 0, you don't have that item, or it's equiped on a different mech...

On the right hand side where all your weapons/items are lsited, there is a number. If you already own one (or more) of that item it will tell you how many you have in your inventory. It says QTY and a number in the top right corner of each weapon/item.
If you stripped a Gauss rifle off a mech, it will be in the inventory. Adding a gauss rifle to a different mech, if you had one in storage, will have no cost.
You may also sell individual item from the inventory; click the item, and a sell button appears in the bottom-middle of the mechlab inside the item specifications box.

It goes into your stockpiles of junk. Unfortunately, the only way to look at this stuff is to go to a mech's loadout customization screen, look at a body part with the appropriate hard point, and then scroll through the list of items and see which ones you have. It is possible to have equipment you cannot access at all. For example, if you stripped the AC10 off of your CN9-A, sold the mech later, and bought a CN9-AL. Since the AL has no ballistics hardpoints, you won't be given the option to look at ballistic weapons.
We've been promised a fix in the version 2 user interface, as well as the ability to rearrange our mech bays, but it has been in the works for some time and the community has not received much in the way of status updates.

the inventory can only be accessed through a mech's customizer at the moment.
but with UI2.0 i think they are planning to add an actual inventory where you can actually sell/see all the things you own etc.

Note:
1) If the area selected does not have hardpoints for an item (engines don;t go in arms, etc), then it will not be in the list to the right.
2) QTY is circled on the Right.
3) Area selected in circled.
4) To sell item is circled.
5) This will ALL change when UI2.0 is released.
