I've used Highlander, Orion and Victor as LRM5/15/20 carriers recently and usually see 2 types of missile trajectory: 1) almost straight up from the tubes, flying high in the sky and dropping on enemies from above and 2) not so straight up, with slight ascent, if shot from ~200-250 m distance it may even look like almost direct shot. No Artemis installed in all cases, TAG/NARC almost never used also.

I can't understand whether there is some system in how trajectory is chosen - for example, I run towards caldera in Caustic Valley, while keep shooting enemies that are scouted by my team and are not in my LOS, missiles use trajectory "a" - go up high, over caldera edge and irritate poptarts by dropping on their heads. While I start climbing the hill situation changes - missiles start to go almost directly ahead and hit terrain, I thought that it depends on distance to target, but that wasn't clearly confirmed yet. TAG and LOS also doesn't seem to affect missile path.

Is there a clear explanation of how missile flight path is chosen and depending on which circumstances?

I also noticed that when lrm's are about to hit the ground they change direction and travel along the ground.

Haven't seen that. They either go over obstacles using high altitude curve or go straight ahead and hit terrain. Second thing almost always happens when facing hill (strange thing is, if missiles would've taken high route, they would not hit terrain, that's why I'm interested in how trajectory is chosen to position my mech accordingly depending on situation).

I think I saw somewhere that if a target was fired upon with your own LOS, the LRMs take the low trajectory. If it's a team mate or UAV lock, they take the high road (I guess on the theory that if you can't personally see the target there's stuff in the way at both ends and tries to fire over the obstacle). I'll see if I can the post and link it here.

EDIT: The Dev post that I remember reading is 404'd now. I'm reasonably sure that it's how I described, though.
