It seems having a standard engine is irrelevant, since you can't survive more then a couple of alpha shots to the CT before you are cored and you drop dead. Having a standard engine for that reason, is pointless because everyone just aims for the CT since it's easier then legging an Assault or a Heavy due to the size of the hit box and convergence being absurdly accurate.

Shoot the spot that kills someone? What a concept. Ever notice that the players who fire and then turn their torsos away from their opponents live longer? There's your CT buff: hide it.

Torso twist and spread your damage.

Torso Twist my friend. Torso Twist.
The reason the Atlus is so good, (Aside from it's max armor) Is that the shoulder pauldrons block almost all of the Torso when twisted.
Meaning the person can live longer. If you are constantly facing the enemy. You will be doing more DPS, but allowing yourself to be center cored MUCH faster and easier. That's the Trade off. Cataphracts and Jagermechs can do AMAZING damage, but are barn walls to hit because they don't twist well or have much cover for their torsos. But then the other mechs CAN cover their CTs very well. It's all balanced.

Rotate and circle. Don't keep your cross hairs on your enemy.
Do you know why ballistics & PPC > lasers? Because you can snap shot then look away, spreading the damage out.

We are within an Battletech Universe, the Mechs we are playing most likely based on Numbers while some Designers draw them. You cant expect a chasis, that is just ment to look cool, passing the Hammer-of-Reality. Players have and always will aim for the spots that are easy to target or weak spots.
And before someone come up with "PGI redesigned the Chassis and could do better..." argument... i atleast for my part, prefer to deal with the weakness of some chassis then to loose the complete Battletech feeling by too much updated designs.
...if anything should be changed, i´d vote for some size Changes of the Mechs, most of them either ways to large or ways to tiny...

I'm not one of the ultral33t high ELO players but I'm not a complete scrub either and most people I fight are competent. I consistently end matches in my AC20 Flame with most of my armor stripped off and often lose an arm and my RT before they finish off my CT.
This is in a dragon. A mech that has a freaking huge CT and moves only 90 kph. So it's my opinion that the problem is more that assault mechs don't tend move very much and try and don't torso twist to keep on target making their CT vulnerable to coring.
