Im thinking, with all the talk about House Steiner's big weakness being unqualified "social generals", Steiner pilots (and only Steiner pilots) should be able to purchase rank advancements.... Use RL Cash to buy our way to higher ranks. The canon police should absolutely LOVE this idea...

Social Generals don't have to pay for the rank in canon.
The only military where one actually has to pay for an officer rank are the Magistracy Armed Forces.

From Sarna.net:
So yeah. Social generals are not quite what you think they are, OP.
(Assuming you didn't know that already, but what the hell. Any excuse to punch up Sarna.)

Since the fall of the Star League, the Lyran Commonwealth's High Command had a reputation for being bloated, inept, and ineffective. Early in its existence, the Commonwealth created the title of "Social General" for those important individuals who lacked other titles. Social generals are not unique to the Lyrans, but there is a preponderance of them compared to other nations. These individuals are officers (not necessarily high-ranking, despite the term) who received their position through networking as opposed to martial talent. These social generals decided in time that they possessed military authority and began overseeing actual military operations. Rank and awards were handed out like so many party favors and the structure soon became top-heavy. The incompetent leadership of the Lyran military has been responsible for many a bad decision, and poor leadership has reflected in the performance of their troops.

Well, "paying" for rank is the closest we the players could come to being born into a position to be given rank. But since it's technically the Armed Forces of the Federated Commonwealth now (Victor having just graduated from Nagelring), the social generals thing has been phased out slightly. I see where the OP is going with this. Personally, though, I intend to either earn my ranking or remain a MechWarrior who's only there to soak up fire.

Interesting idea, but _players_ aren't likely to be generals. Generals command battalions and regiments. They don't drive mechs.
If social generals rear their heads in the game (and I hope they don't), the best fit would be the devs (who will be running the houses and all house units). I speculate that they'd deliberately make decisions which would put the Lyrans behind the 8-ball on a strategic or tactical sense.

Just blame the social generals for all your losses while playing House Steiner. There the ones sending you to fight.

Technically if you bought your rank instead of actually taking the time to obtain it through the field I think it would be pretty fitting. Considering it's a term and not a rank, you could still be an inept low ranking officer and still be a social general.
