It's so encouraging to discover I'm not simply "that guy" who prefers running with analog controls, or at least a mix. We're a rapidly-growing minority of players with obviously superior common sense. ;)

Fascinating. Did you do a total uninstall/reinstall, or just re-run the installer and let it copy files?

Total.

I was afraid you were going to say that. I think I just cried a little inside... ;)

Mkay, after so much fussing I found out what it was causing me trouble in setting up the joystick. When setting a joystick up don't try to put joystick controls on Throttle Up and Throttle Down. Instead place it in Analog Throttle near the bottom. Same for left and right turn.

I'll edit this sometime today or tomorrow with my controls mapped to a few pictures of my hotas.

It didn't even occur to me to ask, but I've seen that a couple of times on the Hardware forum. Yeah, needs to be mapped to the Analog controls, and for whatever reason they put those separately toward the bottom. They need to rework the whole key mapping section, including a way to zero-out a key.

For those willing to give JS a try here is my user.cfg.

cl_joystick_gain = 8 ;
cl_joystick_sensitivity = 1.10
;cl_joystick_sensitivity = 1.25 ;setting was 0.7/1.05/1.14
cl_joystick_throttle_range = 0
cl_joystick_invert_throttle = 1
;cl_joystick_invert_pitch = 1
; cl_joystick_invert_yaw = 0
; cl_joystick_invert_turn = 0
; i_joystick_deadzone = 0.25 the syntax may be incorrect
i_joystick_buffered = 0 ;supposed to increase sensitivity

;Anything with a semi colon has over time become redundant because it has been implemented or fallen away. Note that the ;Omicron log will complain about these in the log file, but they are, as of writing, functional. Sadly no decent documentation to ;be had from PGI. Throttle_range sets the throttle that stop is in the middle, making reversing easier

Best way to implement look spring atm is the Crescent Fresh TARGET mouse emulator script for vanilla Thrustmaster. He seems to have left the game, so pm me if you need it. Got it from Loc Nar, who seems on a leave of absence atm.

I use the RAT7 and a Razer Nostromo little more feel with out going full controller/joystick ( but I do have a Sidewinder waiting for when the joystick option is as effective as the mouse )

o_O still here... was busy in the leadup to the launch party cause I was trying to get my mechpit together to bring with me though! ...but what mean 'look spring'? I actually did get my pit together enough but was told not to bring it once I finally asked...

Just as well, it would have been a liability for me there since it was dark and drunkenly towards the end and it was not an event well set up for any type of floor display. I now need to update my cockpit posts now though to reflect the massive wave of work I did (paint, proper cushion covers, subwoofer integration, free-standing forward section, tons of cleanup, etc)

As to the best controller to buy, I have little advice to offer. Throttle/steering is easy to recommend for since any ole joystick or throttle/pedals combo smokes a keyboard and a $5 Attack3 does that job as good as anything, but reticule aim is another story. Just like the cursor in your browser, MWO is coded around zero-order control inputs however any joystick you can buy is a first-order controller and there is no middle ground to make these two very different control types meet. Even a Warthog is a boat anchor in this environment.

zero-order control: direct manipulation of target position -also called direct inputs

first-order control: manipulation of target velocity

Unfortunately a first-order controller is not capable of the same feats as a zero-order controller so long as the task is pure zero-order like MWO. This is why I can't recommend any controllers to *buy for aiming other than zero-order controllers such as a mouse. However if you or anyone is capable of light machining and other industrial operations, it is possible to construct a viable joystick that is optimized for zero-order control, which is what I have done for my own control solution. http://imgur.com/a/ixi64

If the terms zero-order or first-order control are not already in your lexicon for these discussions, I recommend at least skimming the writeup I did on this, called Controls Demystified(?)

I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news to joystick users, but MWO is already zero-order control, which means the irreparable concession to the mouse was already made before closed beta even began and there is no mythical 'joystick support' just around the corner that can magically rewrite basic fundamentals of human factors of engineering.

First-order control joysticks/controllers will never be able to shine in this game as a direct result of this decision. The meeting ground where mice and joysticks can compete on even footing at this stage entails uprooting mouse control aka nerfing mice. They already spoiled everyone on pure zero-order, which leaves no room for first-order control to ever be viable. Past mech titles achieved parity by not allowing pure zero-order with any controller, which puts them on even(ish) footing. Enabling zero-order input however weeds all first-order controllers out of the race and it's a one-way street.

There you have it guys, though I can say I am the owner of a lovely boat anchor - and like it, mostly. Except on the days when I foam at the mouth. The price of progress, I guess, is being a luddite eternal as you ungracefully refuse to age in a socially acceptable manner.

Razer puts out the best hardware for gaming, however their reliability is abysmal. Make it a point to buy the higher end Razer gear and get a warranty if you do buy it. Razers keypads work very well for being a replacement for the awsd keys and its separate from the keyboard so there is less chance of hitting a wrong key. Razers gaming mouses feel good in your hand and they come with a keypad on the side to use. The other benefit is even though joysticks blows in this game, having a separate keypad can give you a better feeling like you are using a joystick if that is your preference.

I'd love to grab a good mouse for my right hand, but I'll never be convinced to use anything but analog controls for movement.

I have been using a Razor Nostromo LH. Thumb pad for direction & speed, buttons for various controls. Razor Naga mouse RH for Looking and weapons. The Nostomo is not functioning as well as it used to specifically the direction control which is not good when you are being targeted.
I know Razor has the Orb Weaver which is pretty much like the Nostromo. I am used to it and would like a similar system but don't want it to fail after another six months to a year like the Nostromo did.
Someone recommended a CH Pro Throttle LH & mouse RH which sounds good if the throttle twists left and right for direction? Anyone with this setup please comment.
FYI I also have two joysticks sitting collecting dust. A sidewinder from the Mech Warrior four days and a Thrustmaster T.1600 (haven't had very good luck with either).
Thanks.

Since this topic came up again, the Zero-channel or whatever thingy for having mouse-quality control from a joystick has been found in the low-cost non-official PS3 controllers sold at walmart. Its precision is surprisingly good. Sadly I don't think the PS3 controller has enough buttons to be worth putting two hands on, though.

Nostromo on the left for moving and miscellaneous, DeathAdder on the right for shooting and targeting. Works great. Only issue is me!
