As Spider is not a GUNDAM folks, play it like one and you should die! (/rant sorry back to topic)
Glad to hear of a pilot with a Mech they genuinely love.. Thats the spirit of Battle tech not the Min max builds. Tell me OP whats it called..? All good Mechs need a name??

I just finally bought an Atlas, after much waffling, because of all the "Oh, only noobs drive the Atlas! Get something else, you tool!" and warnings that "It's a big walking target! It's sooo slow, and you will get torn apart by lights!". We have all heard it before. Yet, I have a definite taste for big, slow, cantankerous mechs. I wanted another assault mech, and after considering the Highlander, I chose the Atlas.
And I am so glad I did!
It IS slow. Slow as molasses in January on a glacier. But it makes up for it in spades. I made a build with one AC/20, 3 racks of SRM4s, 2 ERLLs, AMS, and ECM. It DESTROYS. I stride clumsily across the battlefield, mowing down all who dare challenge my bulky, beefy might. At range I am protected from missiles almost completely by my ECM, and when I DO get locked on, my trusty AMS makes any hits amount to a light tickle on my super-thick hide. My ERLLs melt the faces of mechs at range (it runs surprisingly cool), as I creep forward to get within AC/20 range. When I do, the REAL fun starts.
I knew I was in love today when a Spider ran by me, and because I seem to have absolutely uncanny aim with the AC/20, I nailed him running at a full sprint, coring him in that one shot. He cursed me on open chat for quite a while. My eyes crinkled with mirth, and I produced a face which I can only assume looked like this:
Oh and there is no sweeter reward than the tears of those exploiting the game(Spiders, Raven-3L...).

Bad ones will circle, faceplant and get stuck.
Good Light pilots will use their jumpjets to get up on that building and shoot at the centre torso (The left eye of the Atlas is not possible any more) from relative safety. If that is not possible, then he will pull away for a bit and go after a different target and return later when you moved away from that wall to rinse and repeat.

LOL! comments like this just perplex me to no end...
If a person pilots anything but the top-tier mech / loadout, they are told their are selfishly handicapping their team... Yet when a person elects to pilot said top-tier equipment they are accused of noobing...
What a fickle un-yielding community this has become.

Figured that out ages ago. I haven't had many problems killing lights since.

I just think the plural form of Atlas should be Atlai. I find it humorous.

Alas, I did not know or even suspect that it would be as amazing as it was, and so I did not name her. I hope PGI changes it so you can rename mechs. I might go with Big Bertha or Angry Betty. lol

As for all those good light pilots...Ignore them for the most part except to make them back off a little, unless you must confront them. If you do well as an assault pilot and kill off the opposing heavies, your team's lights will take care of the little buggers.

News to me. I definitely got a headshot on an enemy Atlas mere days ago. Are you sure??
The left eye of teh Atlas is still the cockpit, that hasnt changed. That part in the quoted post was because it was speaking of a Jenner above and behind the Atlas, hence the left eye not being targetable any more.

I see. You are also right about a GOOD light pilot being hard to kill in a lone assault mech. A lot of people aren't good though, and try to fight in unintelligent ways. A skilled assault pilot will counter that by: walking backwards, not trying to turn with a circling light and instead reversing direction to get multiple passes at the circling enemy (And with an AC/20, it only takes one good shot to kill), Putting a building or wall behind their back, trying to lead a light into a place they will get stuck with your own movement and positioning, and standing back-to-back with another mech. Then there is the best tactic of all imho: Guess where the light will go and what he will do. I have wasted more than one light that got predictable and rounded a corner thinking I had gone chasing after where he had disappeared and that he would come up behind me, only to emerge from cover looking down my gun barrels.
I have gotten pretty good at fighting lights, since I am mostly an assault pilot and I deal with them almost every drop. You probably already know this, but beware using jump jets around a smart assault pilot. We know that the instant you land, you are almost standing still, and if someone is jetting a lot I just wait for when they drop and BOOM. Dead light. My best advice for fighting assaults is simply hit-and-run. That is hardest for me to counter, since I cannot spend the time to chase you all over the battlefield. Shoot a heavy or assault once in the back, then leave, find someone else, and shoot them. Rinse and repeat. I can't fight you if you don't stay and fight, and lights will ALWAYS get the first shot and be able to escape if you pilot well. You can do a TON of damage to the enemy team without nearly any retaliation. Best advice I can give since this has worked well against me in the past and I haven't found a counter for it yet.
