Don't lie to yourself. The color of the three laser types is more important to you then you want to admit. :)

However, I believe we already have our answer, and Mechwarrior Online will be going to the MW2 style:
Blue for Large Lasers, Green for Medium Lasers, and red for Small Lasers.

(This is in contrast to, for example, MW3 with red LLas and blue SLas... or MC2 "Everything's red!"... or whichever game you remember most fondly).

The reason I say this is from the 3 released 'mechs. Specifically, the Hunchback: if you'll notice, the small laser mounted on top of his torso has a red lense, whereas the other lasers (mediums) have green lenses. This holds true to the Jenner and Atlas' medium lasers as well.

So what do you think? A small detail to some, but hearkening back to the MW2 times... that gives me a warm fuzzy feeling.

As long as they look and sound like star wars/classic battlestar galactica lasers, i am good.

Same as mechwarrior 2, red for small, green for medium, blue for large (though admittedly, the mechassault purple for the large lasers was kind of cool).

when it comes to laser looks, they should be quick snaps that instantly hit the target (you cant have light travel at LESS THAN THE SPEED OF LIGHT, SO NO FLOATING STARWARS BLASTER SHOTS!)

when it comes to the sounds of lasers, realistically there shouldnt be one, light doesnt make a sound, but i would be happy with the sound of a 1 or 2 tonne capacitor discharging (which should be pretty loud), and the crackle and hiss as the laser melts through enemy armor.

Hmm PPCs need to have varying colors when ER-PPCs are introduced/used, like say light blue for standard and a dark blue or purple for ER. I am also hoping they go with the electrical bolt visual for the PPC instead of the blue ball used in the earlier MW games.

I agree. Look at a lightning storm and tell me you don't want to just shoot that at someone. I know that's what I think anyway...

I liked MC2's way of doing it, Red for regular lasers, Green for Pulse, Blue for Heavy.

They will all be Pink, but have different indicators. Small lasers will be light pink with yellow polka dots, medium will be dark pink with black stripes, and large lasers will be hot pink and cause the target to have flashes of ponies across their screen

Well the color of the laser only indicates the frequency of light but as for the power of the laser only wattage really matters which makes the color choice arbitrary. That being said I think the Clan and IS lasers should have the same color scheme since the base technoloy is the same.

That's what I'm thinking, might even be a purchasable thing. Like if you want to pimp your laser...

Instant hit "beam" lasers (i.e. not bolts like in starwars), cuz thats what they'd be in real life. Rather, PPC's should be bolts.

Color should depend on manufacturer (e.g. medium laser is manufactured by all types of ppl according to the sourcebooks. So a med laser could be red, green, whatever). It'd add an element of mystery.

In space the lasers should be invisible, since there is no air to ionize and thus create the flash.

Mechs should recoil from the hits like MW4-the ablation of armor (like an explosion) provides the push.

My 2 cents.

While we're on the topic of weapon animations, I'm going to throw out my overall preferences of what I'd personally like.

Lasers - customizable would be fine. The novels have differing colors of beams for every size.

PPCs - I think MW3 hit it dead on. I couldn't stand the blue-blob from MW2, and MW4 looked weak.

Gauss Rifles - None of that swirling-blue around a yellow beam **** (I'm looking at you MW4). Also, the green-gas from 3 was terrible. Just let me fire my 120mm metal slug and have it look like a giant BB, ala MW2.

Missiles - I preferred the individual launches that are in MW2 and MW:LL. Seeing that stream of death flying across a battlefield was amazing.

That should cover it.

Laser strength depends on the wavelength, the shorter the wavelength the stronger it is... so follow the color spectrum:

Small: Red
ER Small: Orange
Medium: Green
ER Medium: Aqua
Large: Blue
ER Large: Violet

I wouldn't want customizable laser colors, it would make it much harder to tell what I'm being shot with. :)

I would have to check my novels but I am sure that Cobrafive has it right on the colors, in reference to canon any how. In my humble opinion the closer that they stick to canon in tech and other things the happier I will be :) .

I think the idea that not knowing what size of a beam was based on color would be a great piece of information warfare. Would require players to pay attention to the size of the beam/damage done/cycle time. Just a thought.
