...or you can unlock the basics, sell that mech, but the other one, do the same, sell it, then finally get the last one and master it?

Also, to access master skills, do you need to have 3/3 elites skills or you simply climb the ladder on a single mech?

Thanks for the answer.

ps: been playing for a while now, as some of you know, and I still dont understand how it works, imagine how new players feels.

You don't have to own them all at the same time. If you unlock all the basics and then sell that mech, it still counts as unlocked for your 3 of 3.

However selling a mech after it has the Basics complete won't count towards having the Elites complete to reach Master.

You need to unlock the basics on 3 mechs of a chassis to open elite. You do NOT need to own them all concurrently to open elite. You then need to open 3 elites of a category (i.e., weight class) to open master. Same rule applies, but you'll wind up losing a lot of C-Bills on the resales. If you're trying to be frugal with your free mech bay slots, it's understandable but considering they're only about $1.50 a bay, it may be worth picking up a few extra bays so you're not faced with the dilemma of which mech to sell off.

What they said.

In short the cheapest way is buy three mechs of a given chassis (ie Ravens) get Basic on all three, then Elite all three, then you have unlocked the ability to get Master on ALL Lights.

What I did was buy a Raven, play until I could afford another Raven, play till I got the 3rd Raven, then sold the 2X and 4X once they were Elited. Having more than one at a time helps due to the x2 XP for the first win. Then since I had Sarah's Jenner, I saved up and repeated the process with Jenners, only I sold them after I got Basic since I didn't need to Elite them due to the Ravens.

Works with any chassis, and the only "extra" mechbay I have is the one I got with Sarah's mech. Now I own two Jagers, and if I quit buying toys for them. might one day get the third.

Though I have a Locust coming, and barring major problems, going to upgrade to the Shadowhawk package soon (the one I am really looking forward to...a TT fav :D)

Technically, yes. But you do not need to own them all at the same time. Once you have unlocked a mech, it stays unlocked, whether you own it or not.

The skills you earn on the pilot trees are permanent, no matter what mechs you own.

It would be nice that once you mastered three variants in one weight class you can go to elite using less than three variants. I do not mind the grinding much, but I do not alwyas like using a chassis that does not fit my playstyle (Hunchback with missiles?) :D

Or, say, 100,000 XP to buy this weight class mastery status to obtain this ability (using GXP not allowed to keep the points within the weight class).

Weight class mastery lvl 1: 100,000 XP: you need to unlock the basic skills of 2 variants in a weight class to go to elite
Weight class mastery lvl 2: 250,000 XP: you can unlock elite skills of any variant in a weight class.

Would be a nice way to spend all those excess XPs. For all four weight classes, this means 12 mechs at master and 1,400,000 XP; a nice goal for the long-term MWO player?

I like the idea, but wouldn't that risk getting to a point where veterans who have put hundreds, even thousands, of hours into the game have an obscene advantage over new players, or even veteran players who sparsely use that weight class, that would take dozens of hours to get onto equal footing?

I'd think if it went that far, the bonuses should probably turn into things like Mechlab discounts and C-Bill/loyalty bonuses. Or maybe something that could convert XP into something other than GXP.

To unlock Elites: You must complete the basics on 3 different variants of a chassis (Jenner-D, -F, -K for example)

To unlock Master: You must complete the Elites on 3 different mechs in the same weight class (Jenner-D, Jenner-F, and Raven-3L for example).

Ownership is only required at the time of purchase for any skills. Once you have purchased the skills, you are free to keep or sell the mech as you wish.

Generally, I recommend simply grinding out the Elites on the first 3 mechs in a chasis just so you don't have to deal with it again. But it's up to you.

Please note that while you only need to Elite three variants of a chassis to unlock Master for all chassis of that weight class, that doesn't unlock Elite for all chassis; you still need three variants of every chassis to unlock Elite.

E.g.
Your first lights are the Ravens; to unlock Elite for them, you need to get to Basic on three variants. To unlock Master, you need to Elite three variants.
Your second lights are the Spiders; to unlock Elite for them, you need to get Basic on all three variants, but Master will be unlocked without the need to Elite all three.

My Spider 5V is still just on Basic while the 5D and 5K are Mastered; this is because I've previously Mastered all five Commandos.

real world example:

i have a master dragon and a master catapult. only variants of the chassis's i own. then i started working on orions. bought 3, basic'd them all, and then elited the one i wanted to keep. now that i have 3 elites or greater (dragon, cat, and now the orioin) the orion can be mastered without eliting the other 2 orions.

I knew what I meant, but yea I wasn't very clear on that.

Can you buy 3 Spider 5Ds and elite them all, or do you have to have 3 different variants to get to Elite?

Three different variants are required. (Also note that (C) versions do not count as a separate variant).

On the plus side, if you have efficiencies unlocked, they will apply to as many copies of that variant as you own (yes, there are reasons).

Rules made easy for this:

To unlock [ELITE] you need to have all [BASICS] unlocked on three different [Variants] of one [Chassis]

To unlock [MASTER] you need to have all [ELITE] unlocked on three different [Variants] of one [Weight Class].
