Yea so only allowing 4 loadout slots for the amount of mechs you can have for free players Is lame. With all the Mechs that there will eventually be this will very well turn players off whom maybe do not have the money to spend on a game like this. idk My self its not having money but also not throwing Money at a game so early in with so much more stuff that will be added Plus the mechs are ******** pricey.
Anyway while the mech bays are Cheaper its still Not really something that needs to be payed for when its kinda Needed. As I do recall when I played the game in beta you needed 3 mechs of the same kind in order to unlock something and with only 3 mech bays they limits the free player Way to much

I've been playing with only 4 mech bays for a while now and I haven't spent money other than the minimum MC package offered for a couple paints. I wasn't compelled to get more bays because none of the mechs were really keepers to me so I would pick a chassis and elite 3 variants then move on to another weight class.
Since the release of some recent mechs, I found that I wanted to keep one variant of each so now I am down to two open bays and just buying a mech at a time to reach basic then selling for another variant. It's a lot of CB wasted by selling a variant I may want to use in the future on an off chance, but it's the "price" you pay as a non paying player. Like you I'm not convinced about putting money into the game its current state.

Yeah, The amount of mech bays though Will eventually hinder big time. In other games with a Similar situation that i have tried out they ended up not lasting long for me because of that very reason. Aka Warframe is one example they keep coming out with to warframes but you have a limited amount of slots.
This is the same way. I see new mechs coming out. 2 of which look badass by the specs and so forth and I want em but I also Want a jeager mech and a Atlas plus i wanna keep the one I have currently and then there should be A ton more mechs coming out.
4 mech bays really needs to be increased to maybe 8 or 10 then buy more if u want

I don't want to be rude.. But mech slots is the initial buy in point to get players to start paying for the game. The slots are not needed to play they are a convenience, pgi has to incentives you to start paying... If there was no conveniences offered to those willing to pay then no one would pay. Conveniences like mech bays are a way better profit model in my opinion the pay to win...
So deal with it in your free game (100% playable and competitive with only 4 slots..... Really you only need 3), or pay for some slots.
