Formed during the 1st Succession War, sometime prior to Summer 2829, by Lawrence Helmund Nelson, rightful Duke of Verde.
Nelson was inspired by the book "Eleven Against the Stars" written by Loran, a Ranger in the Vega System. Loran was one of eleven Rangers, men who plied the long lonely routes between the two inhabited planets within the system. Nelson, on the run from enemies of his family, named himself the 12th Vegan Ranger. In this guise he started to build a mercenary unit to support his struggle to reclaim his birthright. Hence the 12th Vegan Rangers were born.
The 12th Vegan Rangers live by four main codes of behavior set out in Loran's book.
  • A Ranger lives simply and honestly without delusions or manias
  • A Ranger values loyalty, but does not follow others blindly
  • A Ranger must serve people, and not corporations
  • Above all, a Ranger must be free to follow his own destiny
Nelson had a sense of purpose and charisma that allowed him to recruit the best 'Mechwarriors at a fraction of their market salary.

The 12th Vegan Rangers are most famous for their part in The Galtor Campaign on, what was then, the disputed border between the Federated Suns and the Draconis Combine.
The 12th Vegan Rangers were an important part of the thrust into Capellan territory during the Fourth Succession War and were finally stationed on four of the conquered worlds for at least four years after that.

Oh, you guys. This is the best. :)
Forgive me, but I'm going to wax a little wordy on this subject. The short summary is that Stancel becomes a capable commander of the 12th Vegan Rangers during the tumultuous two decades following his promotion.

The commander of the 12th Vegan Rangers Alpha Regiment traditionally serves as the Rangers' senior officer, receiving the rank of general. Tom Stancel replaced the brash, cigar-smoking Douglas Sheridan in 3048. After seeing heavy action in the Galtor Campaign and the Fourth Succession War, the Rangers were spared the ravages of the Clan Invasion, instead remaining behind as the anchor for FedCom border defenses in the Sarna March, where they remained until the Lyran secession in 3057. Stancel saw his share of action during the Marik-Liao offensive which took place shortly thereafter. During that campaign, the Ranger regiments held four worlds in a key area of the Sarna March, an area of space bordered by both the Capellan Confederation and the Free Worlds League. Backed by Marik-supplied mercenary regiments, Liao forces hit all four worlds simultaneously, preventing the Ranger regiments from reinforcing one another.

Had the secession not tied up vital JumpShips, the four mercenary regiments might even have slowed the Capellan assault long enough for reinforcements to arrive, but after the loss of one regiment’s worth of equipment, the outnumbered Rangers reluctantly fell back. Understandably, the Rangers harbored a dislike for Katherine Steiner-Davion ever since, holding her responsible for the losses suffered in the fallen Sarna March. Though pro-Victor, these professional troops had every intention of upholding their contractual obligations to the Federated Commonwealth even after her assumption of the Davion throne. Under Stancel's command the Rangers would prove their effectiveness in the ensuing civil war.

Any hopes Stancel had of remaining uninvolved in the brewing FedCom Civil War were dashed when the Third FedCom RCT commander disobeyed orders from his superiors to rotate off-world. Instead, he launched an unprovoked attack on the First Aragon Borderers, freeing the Rangers to act against the loyalist unit while following the letter of their contract (Leftenant General Kirston of the Borderers was the director of New Aragon’s defenses). Alpha Regiment demolished the larger RCT before jumping to Algol to reinforce the other Vegan regiments.

Now committed to the fight, under Tom Stancel's direction the Twelfth Vegan Rangers would fight many battles during the FedCom Civil War, sending loyalists, Combine and Capellan mercenary units fleeing. Yet despite seeing almost constant action throughout the war, the Rangers emerged in surprisingly good shape when the war ended in 3067, unlike many others.
