I know you are reading the title and saying to yourself "is this guy for real? A guide to CASE? Who needs to know about CASE? Its so simple, even Fred Flintstone could do it." Well yes, that is true which is why I'm going to keep this short. The point of this guide is to ensure that everyone knows what CASE does for them and more specifically, what it doesn't.
Rule 1: This isn’t Clanner CASE. CASE has inherit problems with it, it takes up one slot per side torso, and it weighs 0.5 tons per side torso, and can’t be placed in the arms. On ballistic builds, that is premium space and weight. The decision to take CASE with you should not be made lightly and is something that someone should purchase “aftermarket.” What I mean by that is, try the mech out first. See how your play style works with what you are doing. Do you die horrible fiery deaths due to massive ammo explosions? Maybe CASE is right for you.
Rule 2: CASE ONLY protects your CENTER Torso. That is right. Center Torso is absolutely safe to ammo explosions that happen OUTSIDE of it. The point being if you have 8 tons of ammo in your right torso, kiss that side of your body goodbye. Its gone. Its lying on the ground behind you. CASE contains the explosion, but ALL the damage that would have spread, is done to the side torso, effectively destroying it. TL;DR: Don’t store ammo in the side of your mech with the majority of your weapons. CASE won’t help you.
So far you say, “I already knew this stuff. What do you think I am? I’m not a n00b. Stop telling me stuff I already know.” Okay, this brings me to my most important rule.
Rule 3: CASE + XL Engine = WASTE of weight and slots. See rule 2. I have seen soooooooooo many builds on the forums where people are talking about their awesome build “yeah, my build is the cheese! I’m running an XL260 with 2XUAC5s and CASE in both sides! I rock!” That may be true, but think how much more you could rock if you had the weight and slots left to throw in another ton of ammo. Or an AMS system. If your ammo explodes in your leg, (a very smart thing to do with an XL engine) and you have two tons of lets say UAC5 ammo in that leg. That will cause 5pts of damage x 15rounds x 2tons = 150pts of damage! That will blow the leg clean off with DAMAGE TO SPARE. The remaining damage then travels up to your Side Torso and applies there, WITH DAMAGE TO SPARE. Now, you have an XL engine and CASE so all the extra damage is contained within that side torso, but blows the side torso clean off, and 3 critical slots of engine with it. Guess what, you just died. CASE is unnecessary in a build that uses an XL engine, because it doesn’t do what it is intended: Keep you alive in the event of an ammo explosion.

In short, you only ever want to use a CASE if you are using a standard engine and have ammo in the side torso (except gauss rounds)
Do not use CASE if you have an XL engine, it will not help you.
Only put ammo in the side torsos if the critical slots in your legs and head are filled, or if the weapon system using said ammo is all in a side torso and you want to stack it there.

Additionally Gauss Rifles in Torsos + XL Engines = Bad. CASE won't help you there either.

This is INCORRECT, your CT is not absolutely safe from ammo explosions with CASE installed. CASE in MWO only reduces Ammo Explosion damage it does not prevent it from spreading to the CT. Even with CASE you can lose your CT from an Ammo Explosion of 1 ton of ammo even in your LT or RT is protected with CASE.
I made a new post since too many players are applying Battletech CASE rules to MWO.
