Hitting "R" and holding a target lock until you have all their info will result in rainbow lights shooting out of your cockpit and a massive bonus in XP and C-Bills for the match. Got it?

There have been times when I've been taken out by a mech where I *ALMOST* punched through their RT or LT on a build that usually has an XL. I'll spectate and see someone is now engaging that mech and say: "Aim for the LT on that _____!"

But they'll just shoot at an arm, or the CT, or a leg, when they could have had an easy kill had they just targeted it and realized it was REAL soft RIGHT THERE.

Short version? Yes: ALWAYS hit "R."

No no no no, Rule #1 is People are stupid till proven otherwise. Rule #2 even ugly people need love and Rule #3 is I firmly believe every woman should know how to handle a stick.4

‘R’ (for me it’s E) helps everybody.
It helps you – you see what weapons you’re dealing with, what areas are vulnerable. Use the paperdoll to gauge how much armor mechs have. Put a medium laser in the leg. If it turns orange, unload into his legs.

It helps your team – they’re able to see where enemies are, and helps them for better positioning. THIS IS CRITICAL TO BE AN EFFECTIVE PILOT. It also helps your team see weapon loadouts that are instant threats (AC/40 jager for example) and prioritize targets.

There is NO downside to targeting mechs. Missiles or no missiles, whether you need it or not, it helps everybody. UAV is incredible effective for this. It lights up the ground and makes many targets targetable. You get all the data.

UAV should be a staple in everybody’s mech, but I have a feeling it’s two things that keep it from being that. 1) The cost vs rewards. It’s very expensive. 2) There is no auto-buy option for consumables.

I target quite often, but many times the auto target gives a false sense of 'eyes on target' that simply is not true and I do not always have time to let my team know in text.

Funny but kinda sad:

The other day I was in an assault match on the Canyon map.
After we spawned, I saw a player take off on his own toward the left while the rest of us went toward the right.
After a bit we see someone typing: "Help"........"Help!!!!!"......."HELP!!!!!!"
We knew it had to be the guy over there by himself on the other side of the map because the rest of us were grouped up.
He was too far away for anybody to get there immediately.
He'd obviously run into a bunch o' battlemechs and was really mad at us after he was killed.
He was probably new to the game and we calmly tried to explain how he could have helped himself and the team by hitting the R key....Yes, the first problem was that he'd gone off by himself but we tried to tell him LRM's would have been on the way if we'd had a target.
Hopefully he took it as helpful guidance from experienced players and will, in the future, be much more effective with his natural inclination to run off "scouting" by himself...

ok with that out there.


i have been an "R" user since before my cadet bonus ran out. hey extra c-bills are extra c-bills. when i have an lrm sporting mech i ask "R key please" to which i get mostly good replies. once in a while i get a narc carrying light, then the fun begin. more then once while piloting a spider i have done the distress R. when things work good the R key can help make short work of the other side. other times it does not help at all. but use the R, the R is your friend. if you don't use your R key how do you know not to waste your time bashing the ct on an atlas that striped the armor off the legs?

Sigh everyone quoting rules and you don't even get the right ones. So they are as follows:

1)Keep moving
2) If it moves shoot it
3) if it doesn't move shoot it and if it then moves see Rule #2

I think these were the ones in the MW2 rulebook. ;)

Why does everyone seem to go for the torsos? It seems like legs are generally easier to hit and once one leg is gone, the mech is a goner. I suppose the downside is that the mech is still dangerous after you destroy a leg, while most mechs lose a ton of firepower after they lose a torso, and you have to destroy the second leg to kill it when you can kill a mech with an XL engine with just a side torso kill, and since they're moving back and forth it's easy to spread out your damage instead of focusing on just one point. But those negatives aside, it seems like people just don't think of shooting legs when it does make sense. Just today I saw several instances of a medium or heavy mech running in circles with two or three people aiming high when both of its legs were armorless: One good shot could end the fight if you just aimed down. (And you'd be less likely to hit your allies.)

Am I missing something? I've got less than 200 games under my belt and I'm just learning to keep my shots on target, so maybe it really is much easier to hit specific torso segments than it seems to me right now?

Depends on which mech you are up against. With quite a few mechs, the legs are only secondary objectives (Hunches on Hunchbacks, Balistic torso for Atlaiaseseseseseses....ss, Weapon torso/Arm for Highlanders and Wolverines and so on). Once you get the high damage components off, then go for the legs or check the paperdoll in case the cockpit or the Center torso is already critical compared to the legs.
