I will play anything really. So far I haven´t seriously used my more insane builds as I prefer to stick to stuff that I can make work, but that doesn't really narrow it down much.

I collect mechs if it was just for game play I'd have stopped buying ages ago, most builds now can be recreated on two or three chasis, so all people are now buying are the skins.
Thats what phoenix mechs are all about, the package only works because people don't want to wait until next year for a battlemaster.
I may not be correct, but I doubt very few people who have intrest in only the locust, bothered with the package, and the vast majority bought the overlord, and a large part of those who didn't it was money constraints

I had to go with looks and history. I'd like to think I make more informed choices, but I ground out spiders before it was cool, mastered a dragon way back in the day, and still love my founders catapult which is a mech that has a failing of awkward hard points for most roles in the current meta.
I didn't want the locust, but I was interested in the ShadowH and up and was unwilling to spend more than the 40$ so that's what I would up purchasing.

Two things I'm not seeing mentioned here: Actuators and Arcs
I buy very few mechs that don't have lower arm actuators, and I certainly won't buy heavy+ mechs without them. On top of that, the torso and arm arcs are very important for me, which is why I tend to run Hunchbacks and Dragons the most. The ability to shoot at a target almost regardless of your facing should not be overlooked.
Someone else mentioned high up hardpoint locations which are a must have for any of my fire support mechs and are the sole reason I've stuck it out with blackjacks despite their lack of lower arm actuators.

The looks. I really, REALLY love the looks of Uziel and Chimera. Only sad thing is that they will propably never come if the timeline is not thrown away.
Also, the Nova Cat. Gosh probably one of the best looking chassis ever made!

You should have included speed, or JJ in the survivability portion. Or its own section actually.

Mostly, the look. In many other games, if I can't stand the way a character looks, I will have a hard time using it. Same thing applies to Mechs in this game. However, looks are not the only thing that matters to me. But, it does go a long way. Second, biggest determining factor in if I will use a Mech or not is: How well does it suit my play style.

Thanks everyone for your replies, good to see a few who are superficial like me and will pilot mechs based on looks
. Gotta look good in the mech bay!
I did miss jumpjets and speed as since release I've haven't piloted mechs with either. I did pilot Jenners in open beta but that was when I though this was like all the old Mechwarriors and I could use my joystick to good effect, little did I know back then it wasn't analog yet and I stopped playing till release, and promptly sold all my old mechs.
But this does make me feel better purchasing the Phoenix mechs just becuase I want them lined up in my garage looking all nice, despite not really offering anything else unique.

Looks, followed by survivability.
I have a hunch i love using and a CTF that is great. I pick them over other base on looks, but they are also good mechs for me i tend to do well.
Before i got my CTF i did have a K2 Cat, i love the look of them but i was getting taken out quicker than anything else i'd previously used, so sold it off. At some point i'd like to go back to it and see if i can make it work.
