Why Is My Ping Always So High?

I did a brief search, sorry if this has been answered/addressed previously, but couldn't find anything...

My ping is always in the 115-130 range. From other, faster paced shooters, I know I can ping to (for example) Amsterdam in low 20s, Frankfurt in high teens and Zurich sometimes single digits.

I've even been in MWO matches where everyone has a ping over 100-150. I appreciated this isn't a twitch based shooter, and expect arguments that if everyone has the same ping, it cancels out, etc... But for people coming from FPS backgrounds or other FPS games, these pings are not so great, modern or expected.

In other FPS games, where you can select servers to play on, I wouldn't even bother playing on servers with pings like I have every single match of MWO.

Where are the servers located, and is there just a single location? I guess in Canada, or North America, but this would seem to give an advantage to North American players with (for example) pings in 20-30, when many others in a particular match are pinging 150+. Are there plans to co-locate servers? I like the game, but being forced to be a (comparative) HPB every game is not so great, when I compare to (very low) pings I'm (and I guess other European players) getting in other FPS titles.

Maybe because your ping goes through Amsterdam and gets high on the way?

Jokes aside. The game servers are in North America (Canada). There are no European servers (yet), so your ping is normal for your location (and mine). The game is actually quite playable with our pings.

The HSR (Host state rewind) system allows us to play as if we had the low pings because it takes your/your targets ping into concideration while calculating the weapon damage / hits. There is not really much of a dissadvantage to playing with pings of up to 250ish.

I believe the servers are in Vancouver. I'm in Arizona USA and I always end up with a ping between 111-126. I've only seen a few users with ping below 60, only a handful with 20-30. Part of it is location, part of it is internet connection. My brother, also in AZ, has between 70 and 90 ping, simply because he has a higher quality ISP.

Honestly, I don't feel like ping gives that much of an advantage, especially with the advanced (if somewhat spotty) HSR--the server checks what the client sees, then makes that happen; in theory, this nullifies high-ping disadvantages (or advantages).

I recognize if everyone's ping is in a similar range, then all are on equal footing, and ping seems less important in MWO than twitch based shooters. Indeed, the reason I started playing MWO is it's almost zen like compared to other shooters I tried out recently, after stopping playing the last FPS game (I don't have a background in this genre/lore). The slower pace appealed to me.

The HSR system is a new one to me (coming from games that use either client or server side hit detection systems), so will do some research to understand more.

I was just wondering, but seems I have my answer, so thanks.

The ping of most European players hovers around 130 <give or take a little> and most of the continental American players around 75 <again give or take> with Host state rewind in use you will never notice a difference.

Here in Australia I average 240-350 ping. HSR is pretty good and high ping is not a problem for me. I would definitely not be worried about your 150 ping unless you are experiencing packet loss (when you are moving and your mech jumps backwards and/or forwards).

The only problem I find is when I am bumping into another moving mech and this causes rubberbanding.

I hope this information helps.

I have a issue with the ping since the Dec 17th patch I have now well over 1200 ping and pre patch it was 260-270 ping I have no idea what happened but it seems too be effecting a large player base.

Then maybe explain to me why when I play Warframe(Who is in London, Ontario Canada) I can get pings between 20-30 with FPS in the upper 200's and I am in California, whereas when I play MWO my ping is always around 130 or more? Just wondering:)

Depends on what deals PGI has in place with infrastructure. Different ISPs will designate different traffic to go different routes. I also play League of Legends, and they just had a massive post about this after they moved their servers to Chicago. My LOL ping actually went down after their move from california--because my ISP was routing through colorado, New Mexico, Utah, and Oregon before landing in Cali, but actually goes straight to Chicago. You never know with your ISP or with the hosting company what routing rules apply to which games/places unless you can spend some time and track it down.

Pretty much this. Its a problem with your ISP generally and how they wheel and deal vs the service provider the hosting company uses. If the hosting company isn't on *buddy* status your ISP may very well route you really crazy. Its a form of monopoly to in a way use gamers to push the game company to host in a friendly service provider and it goes well beyond online gaming as well.

There are seperate Oceanic servers though and my guess would be in Japan w/o actually checking. I'm in SE Asia and the ONLY place I can ping like that is a couple of countries like Japan or Singapore. Otherwise its a min 200ms for a *good* connection or generally in MWO 300-350ms (NA servers).

Thought I read that the Oceanic server location was Singapore, though I may be wrong there. Still, that would explain why the Aussies are still rightfully feeling left out.

To the OP: Couldn't tell ya. I'm in Eastern US, and my ping on NA servers is usually mid-30s. High-traffic times it rarely goes over 60 ms, even with Mrs. RAbbi watching Netflix on her laptop downstairs or one of the kids watching YouTube videos. And we don't have the best-quality service, necessarily, in this market. True high-speed internet comes from exactly ONE provider in this area, and companies with monopolies on local markets tend to ACT accordingly. :/

Would be nice if PGI could throw down for game servers in Germany or Holland or Belgium, I suppose.
