Bishop Steiner has a fantastic SH build in the mechs and loadout section. That dude is a fantastic player and I find his build to be inspiring for my own designs. Do yourself a favor now and watch his threads.

Here it is:

That is a VERY solid build.

Mr OP, It can be harder to get to grips with the mechanics of the game in a medium mech (as they can be fragile) but the SH is a great choice, with a good mix of missiles, energy and glorious dakka. IMHO however, the real magic with the SH lies in it's jumpjets. Use them all the time. When brawling, when traversing terrain, when under fire, when bored. They help spread incoming damage out all over you, instead of it gravitating towards the more juicy areas of your mecha anatomy. I've lost count of the number of times i've survived to the end of a battle with no armor, random missing limbs and small surface spot-fires, and I would like to take this opportunity to thank my jumpjets for that. XL engines generally make you more fragile (lose a side torso, you're kerblammo) but the SH handles it with aplomb.

If you're into mad scientisting in the mechlab, my advice would be to try to base your builds around one or 2 weapon systems that you enjoy using. Also, as a rule of thumb, you'll generally need 3 tonnes of ammo for each ammo-based weapon (streaks excluded - you'll likely never need more than 1t per launcher).

Have fun! If you find yourself getting stomped repeatedly, I would advise speaking to one of the player run units in the Merc Corps sub forum. There are some very relaxed groups there, and the game really is easier to get to grips with if you have decent wingmen.
