No 'Mech is really good with machine guns -- they just get lucky. Best use of machine guns is when armor is already gone and you're shooting internals. Then they can crit like crazy.

Whatever you do make sure they both have the biggest engine they can fit.

For the 5d you want an er ll and 2medlas.

For the 5k I now use a medpls and 4 machine guns. Machine guns are a great execute weapon, but will do practically nothing on armoured targets, so the trick is to wait till somebody is hurt then go all out I their internals and kill them really quickly then escape.

The 5K is a vulture. Wait for the armor to be gone or nearly gone and then go in for the kill. If you can find a medium on it's own, you may be able to strip a torso with the LL and then MG it to death, but you don't want to spend too much time, because if someone else shows up things get hairy. I left it as the stock 5KC build because I'm cheap and I don't want to buy a new engine for it, I've got alot of engines I need to buy for Phoenix mechs and my budget is stretched.

5D just use a regular LLas and put it in your torso, and the two MLas in an arm. That way if you lose the arm (and you will eventually lose the arm) you only lose half of your damage dealing instead of 3/4. Also, the ERLLas makes a lot more heat for range (which you don't need) and the same damage. 3MPlsLas can work, put in another HS with the left over ton.

I was using the ERLL & 2 ML before, I liked it fairly well. Trying the 3 MPL on it now, did 347 damage with that build last match, think I'll play round with that bit more.

Whilst the mpl can be fun when being ignored or against people who cannot turn very well, I find I have more 8-9kills 800+ dmg games with the ERLL and 2ML build  (I put the ERLL in the arm).

You can carry much harder on it because you can choose which range to fight in, and at 700-800m out most people cannot hit a Spider very often especially if he is rocking randomly!

I haven't sold my original 5D. I love it! If I'm just screwing around this is my go-to mech. I set up my long range with the ER laser like you have but drop a laser and add a tag. Other lights are a problem, so use it to flank and make the enemy nervous. Advanced zoom helps a lot and the ECM puts you at a distance so they can't get locks. For short range and bigger laughs, I set it up for brawling with 3 med pulse lasers. Heat can be an issue but I dare you to find a Stalker or Phatlas and not grin ear to ear. Just keep picking on one leg till it blows then taunt him from around a corner.

I run my 5K almost like the champion build (1 size smaller engine, 1 more ton MG ammo and 1 more JJ). Run with a 2.0 KD, average 271 damage (after 140 matches). It's one of those mechs that puts a smile on my face the while time I play it. You have to know when to run in and cause havoc though, and when to try and cause confusion, but not commit to engaging. (Note: I felt a little bit cheated when two moths after I started running this build, they nearly copied in the champion build, and now everyone runs it)
