OK, so MoonUnitBeta is running a contest for Marauder redesigns. I might have totally misred the intent, but my impression was that he wanted fresh, new and original design takes, not retreads of us using existing art we had, (in which case Shimmering Sword's Marauder I can pretty well guarantee has already won). I might try to paint this later, but since I have no particular skills in that field, I figured i'd stick to what I knew, hand drawn line art, TRO style.

As always, trying to find that fine line between the source art and a more functional aesthetic, which is doubly hard on as iconic, yet utterly poorly engineered a design as the original Marauder, which would not even be capable of walking.

By adding the Cicada like ankle sheath (also seen in the PHX art), I figured I could keep the basic feel of the legs, but make them actualyl functional. The arms were moved back, both to visually remove it form HGs little clutches and tie it closer to the TimberWolf, but also to continue to actually try to give it functional balance, as the original would simply plow face first into the ground if it tried to walk. Likewise, the shoulders were flared to give the arms clearance over the hips, and give room for the side pods and rt mounted AC. Lastly, I tired to keep the somewhat lean feel of the original, as I feel that was essential to it's air of menace, whereas I always felt that the too many of the newer renders left the Marauder looking too bulky.

Thoughts?

Well when the original design was "engineered" to fly 40 foot tall people around I guess you run into issues... oddly enough the Marauder did actually fly for the Genesis game but I just call it "anime magic".

Looking good though. Not sure if the AC feels a bit big, but it does feel familiar so I'll go with that as a plus sir.

Hey Bishop and everyone else.
Yes art must be new. I apologize to everyone, I updated the rules with the requirement that art must be created within the contest's timeline and posted in the contest thread about the update and why the rule was not in the to start with, and there have not yet been any submissions that are unreasonably refined.

Hope this clears it up. I'm glad he brought it to my attention...

Yeah, it is a little over sized. IK tried smaller, and though it felt more "IRL" it felt less...... Marauder, if you get me? The MAD always had an oversized dorsal cannon, and so it still does. And it is over 1/10th the Mechs weight, as are each arm gun pod, so a little large felt right.

The one thing that bugs me with this is your perspective. The legs feel small especially since in the perspective they are supposed to be closest to the viewer, and the dorsal gun looks big, but considering it is farthest from the viewer it will be larger in diameter then the legs. Overall design-wise it looks good though. I’ve been playing around with my sketchbook to get a design for the MAD that I like. Good luck in the contest.

Beautiful work as always. I like how you redesigned the legs. Looks like they might actually work. Cicada was probably good inspiration to draw from. Though imo they do look a little bit thin proportionally to the torso. Especially the upper thigh areas.

Loves arms and the stance, nice and menacing look.

looks great! legs seem a bit perplexing, but cool none the less. Like the subtle shading too!

That's super cool. It evokes the original -totally stolen and illegal- design while fitting in very nicely with the new aesthetic of MWO. Did you do this digitally (if so what program?) or old skool analog (if so what pens/markers did you use)?

Well, the weapons always gave me the impression that they were much heavier compared to other components for the literal space they appeared to take up. Like half the Daishi's weight just being payload etc. I really know what you mean though, that cannon was part of what really sold that design visually. It always made me think it should have been a Gauss Rifle though originally. Good thing that came in the 5S :)

Incorrect.

FASA licensed the work from the artist. However the studio in Japan that bought the work then licensed Robotech to Harmony Gold. FASA had just gotten screwed by Playmates in the Exosquad litigation, and Harmony Gold threatened to sue. FASA settled rather than risk a lawsuit which would have bankrupted the company, even if they won.

Gauss would not exist at the time, but an AC/10 could have worked perhaps?
