Do MG/AMS ammo explode? how much damage do they deal when they do?

I wouldn't call 80 & 24 damage "not much".

Amount of damage listed there is per shot remaining in that ton of ammo. Gotta be weary of that.

Thankfully this means that if there wasn't much ammo left when it goes boom, you'd barely notice it.

It used to be noted that you had to take that into account. I'm not sure why it's removed.

For the most part, as long as you don't clump all the ammo together, the damage usually isn't high enough to worry about CASE. If you end up needing it, you likely wouldn't have made it out of that situation anyway.

And CASE is useless with an XL. Just in case somebody reading this thread didn't know that already. Worse than useless actually, it takes up weight and a slot.
